Position Summary
Hackley School is seeking an experienced Theater Technician to provide technical support for external rental events held in the Allen Center for the Creative Arts and Technology, which includes a 560 seat concert hall and 90 seat black box theater.
This is an as-needed on-call hourly position. The technician will work with the Director of Auxiliary Programs, rental clients, and Hackley Schools Director of Performing Arts and/or Technical Director to ensure the successful execution of events requiring audio, lighting, projection, and related technical support.
Hours will vary based on the rental calendar and will primarily include evenings and weekends.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Operate lighting, sound, and projection systems in support of performances and audio, lighting, projection, and related technical support for external rental events.
- Review event requirements and technical needs in advance with the Director of Auxiliary Programs and rental client.
- Complete paid training with Hackley School's Technical Director to become proficient in the operation, setup, and troubleshooting of the school's audio, lighting, projection, and theatrical systems, and demonstrate the ability to operate all assigned equipment independently before supporting rental events.
- Set up, test, operate, troubleshoot, and shut down lighting, sound, and projection equipment.
- Serve as the on-site technician and board operator technician throughout the rental event.
- Support microphones, sound reinforcement, playback, presentations, projection, lighting, and other approved technical needs.
- Coordinate with rental clients, performers, speakers, event planners, and approved outside production vendors.
- Conduct pre-event sound checks and technical rehearsals when required.
- Ensure renters and vendors use Hackley equipment and facilities appropriately and in accordance with school policies.
- Communicate promptly with the Director of Auxiliary Programs regarding equipment issues, damage, safety concerns, or changes to the event plan.
- Report equipment maintenance or repair needs following each event.
- Maintain orderly control booths, backstage areas, and workspaces during and after rental events.
- Properly power down, secure, and store all equipment at the conclusion of each event.
- Follow all Hackley safety, security, and facility procedures.
- Perform other rental event-related technical duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum two years working in theatrical production or relevant technical field.
- Experience supporting concerts, performances, presentations, conferences, or similar live events.
- Strong knowledge of microphones, digital audio consoles, speakers, projectors, presentation equipment, and basic theatrical lighting systems.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and make sound technical decisions during live events.
- Ability to use QLAB to design and operate sound playback and video cues.
- Ability to troubleshoot programming and equipment issues effectively during rehearsals and events.
- Excellent communication, professionalism, and customer service skills.
- Ability to work effectively with rental clients, performers, event planners, and outside vendors.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to event quality.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds and move audio/visual equipment and work on ladders when necessary.
- Flexible availability, including evenings and weekends.
- Experience working in a theater, performing arts center, school, or event venue is preferred.
- EITHER
Demonstrated proficiency operating and programming Yamaha QL series consoles
- Experience designing and live mixing music and/or theatrical events
- Ability to use QLab to design and operate sound and video cues
- Knowledge of Dante I/O, QSYS, and Shure wireless microphones
- A basic understanding of operating ETC Ion lighting consoles
- OR
Demonstrated proficiency programming, and operating on an ETC Ion XE
- Experience designing and/or busking lighting for events (concert, dance, plays, etc)
- Ability to use QLab to design and operate sound and video cues
- Ability to read a lighting plot and magic sheet
- A basic understanding of live sound mixing, Yamaha QL series sound console knowledge preferred
Scheduling and Engagement
Assignments will be offered based on Hackleys facility rental calendar and the technical requirements of each event. The position may require participation in a pre-event walkthrough, planning calls, sound check, rehearsal, or equipment setup in addition to the event itself.
The number of assignments and hours is not guaranteed and will vary throughout the year.
Compensation
The hourly range for this position is $35-$45, 4-hour minimum per scheduled event.
