Medical Assistant - (FLOAT) Bridgewater Ortho Hand Surgery

Job Title: Medical Assistant (Float) – Orthopedic & Sports Medicine / Hand Surgery Job Description This role provides compassionate, high-quality care to patients in a busy orthopedic and sports medicine environment, with a focus on hand surgery. The Medical Assistant supports back-office clinical operations, performs patient intakes and vital signs, prepares rooms and charts, and ensures accurate documentation in the electronic medical record. The position is a float role, primarily based in Bridgewater, NJ, with regular travel to additional clinic locations. Responsibilities

- Provide compassionate, professional care to patients in an orthopedic and sports medicine practice, including hand surgery patients.
- Perform patient intakes, including collecting medical histories, family histories, and reviewing previous visit notes.
- Room patients efficiently, ensuring they are prepared for examinations and procedures.
- Measure and record vital signs accurately, such as blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and other required metrics.
- Conduct medication reconciliation, confirming current medications and updating records as needed.
- Prepare charts prior to patient visits, ensuring all relevant documentation is available and organized.
- Prepare patient exam rooms before each visit, including setting up equipment and supplies needed for orthopedic and sports medicine care.
- Complete prior authorizations for treatments, imaging, procedures, and medications as required.
- Restock patient rooms and supply closets regularly, and complete inventory to maintain adequate stock levels.
- Triage phone calls from patients and physicians, addressing questions or routing inquiries appropriately.
- Update and maintain accurate electronic medical records using EPIC and other practice systems.
- Support high-volume patient flow, helping manage daily schedules that may include up to 80–100 patients in the office.
- Assist physicians and physician assistants in a fast-paced environment, including rooming 30–40 patients per day for advanced practice providers.
- Collaborate closely with multiple physicians and medical assistants to ensure efficient, coordinated patient care.
- Adapt communication and work style to different physician personalities and pacing, maintaining professionalism and teamwork.
- Follow practice protocols and procedures to ensure patient safety, confidentiality, and quality of care.

Essential Skills

- Experience in medical assisting, with 1 year of medical assistant experience preferred; open to new graduates.
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential preferred, with an accredited diploma from a medical assistant school strongly valued.
- Proficiency with electronic medical records, including experience with EPIC.
- Ability to perform patient care tasks such as intakes, vital signs, medication reconciliation, and room preparation.
- Comfort working in a sports medicine practice and orthopedic environment, including hand surgery.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced office with high patient volume and rapid visit flow.
- Strong organizational skills for chart preparation, prior authorizations, and inventory management.
- Effective communication skills for triaging phone calls and interacting with patients, physicians, and colleagues.
- Adaptability to work with different physician personalities and varying work styles.
- Reliability and flexibility to work a full-time schedule with availability between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

- Experience in orthopedic or sports medicine settings is highly beneficial.
- Exposure to caring for patients with sprains, strains, fractures, dislocations, tendonitis, bursitis, concussions, overuse injuries, arthritis, and post-surgical rehabilitation is an advantage.
- Comfort assisting with care for both athletically active patients and older adults managing arthritis and injury prevention.
- Familiarity with physical therapy referrals and coordination of care is helpful.
- Experience working with multiple physicians and advanced practice providers in a team-based clinical environment is preferred.
- Ability to maintain composure and accuracy in a busy, high-volume practice.
- Strong teamwork mindset and willingness to collaborate closely with other medical assistants.
- Detail-oriented approach to documentation, authorizations, and inventory tracking.

Work Environment This position is based in a high-volume orthopedic and sports medicine practice with a focus on hand surgery. The Medical Assistant works under several sports medicine physicians and alongside a team of medical assistants in a collaborative, fast-paced setting. The office typically sees 80–100 patients per day, with individual physicians seeing approximately 20–50 patients daily, and physician assistants seeing 30–40 patients per day. The primary location is Bridgewater, NJ, with floating responsibilities to Berkeley Heights and Westfield, and occasional coverage in Florham Park, Morristown, Denville, and Short Hills. The standard schedule is a full-time, 40-hour workweek, Monday through Friday, generally 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with some days potentially running 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. There is a 30-minute unpaid lunch break. Availability between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. is required to accommodate physician schedules, and there may be occasional Saturday shifts from approximately 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. or 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The environment is busy and dynamic, requiring flexibility, strong teamwork, and the ability to adapt to different physician communication styles. Clinical dress is typically professional medical attire appropriate for direct patient care in an orthopedic and sports medicine setting.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $28.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
