Become an Geotechnical Engineer 2 at Southern California Edison (SCE) and build a better tomorrow. In this job, you’ll lead subsurface investigations and provide geotechnical evaluations to support the design and construction of transmission, substation, and civil infrastructure projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the geotechnical engineering lead and/or support SCE geotechnical staff on multidisciplinary teams for new, modified, or upgraded substation, transmission, and related infrastructure projects.
- Coordinate with project managers, engineering disciplines, environmental, and stakeholders throughout project development and execution.
- Plan and execute geotechnical investigations, including field exploration, testing, data analysis, engineering evaluations, and technical reporting.
- Travel to project sites to support project scoping, site assessments, investigations, and construction activities.
- Prepare geotechnical reports, engineering recommendations, and design criteria for infrastructure projects.
- Manage geotechnical engineering consultants, including scope development, technical oversight, quality review, and invoice approval.
- Perform field evaluations, including occasional soil investigations using hand augers to depths of up to 10 feet.
- Evaluate subsurface soil, rock, and groundwater conditions and develop recommendations for transmission tower foundations, substation equipment foundations, retaining walls, and other civil/structural infrastructure designs.
- Review civil and structural designs and provide geotechnical engineering guidance to support safe and cost-effective project delivery.
- Review internal and consultant-prepared geotechnical reports for compliance with SCE standards and engineering requirements.
- Obtain permits and coordinate with local agencies and jurisdictions to support geotechnical investigations and project execution.
- Monitor and observe construction activities to verify compliance with project plans, specifications, and geotechnical recommendations.
- Champion a culture of safety by applying safe work practices and incorporating safety considerations into engineering designs.
- Field Operations, Travel, & Construction Support:
Safely operating a vehicle on transmission access roads, including unpaved dirt roads in hilly and rugged terrain.
- Able to walk several miles over uneven, steep, and undeveloped terrain while performing field activities.
- Capable of lifting, carrying, and handling hand auger equipment and other tools or materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Able to work outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions while conducting field inspections and investigations.

Responsibilities
- Performs inspections and evaluations of existing conditions for various electrical equipment and systems for proper installation, problem identification/ trouble shooting, and overall improvements.
- Ensures system event assessments and RCA are performed for equipment failures and implements corrective actions, confirming proper mitigation plans are in place.
- Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and design plans related to projects and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
- Conducts independent engineering work, receiving guidance on the evaluation, selection, application and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria.
- Performs power system modeling and analyses utilizing software tools and applications; stays informed of technology advancements, market trends, and relevant guidelines and standards related to energy technology.
- Ensures the performance of day-to-day preventive maintenance activities to maintain equipment and ensure continued operation according to required standards including Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) quality and environmental and reliability standards.
- Helps ensure infrastructure’s supporting processes are validated/qualified throughout their life cycle.
- Develops the engineering facility design, including but not limited to electrical system design, such as sizing, creating one-line diagrams, and selecting equipment.
- Assists in the development of new technology and standards strategy and the implementation of strategies into business operations to improve power system functionality and quality of service to customers.
- Acts as project sponsors with some technical assistance when responding to technical questions requiring project modification to move projects through their lifecycle.
- A material job duty of all positions within the Company is ensuring the protection of all its physical, financial and cybersecurity assets, and properly accessing and managing private customer data, proprietary information, confidential medical records, and other types of highly sensitive information and data with the highest standards of conduct and integrity.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Bachelor's Degree in a scientific/technical/math field.
- Two or more years of experience performing engineering work in operations, production, construction or maintenance environments.
- Possess a valid Class C Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geology, or other related degree
- Two or more years of experience performing geotechnical engineering work
- Experience using engineering software, Microsoft Office Suite, and digital productivity tools, including AI technologies, to efficiently manage projects, analyze data, and prepare technical reports .
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with ability to build productive working relationships with both field operations staff and office personnel.
- Possess Engineer-In-Training (E.I.T.) or Certificate or Geologist-in-Training (G.I.T.).
- Possess State of California Civil Engineering Professional Engineers (PE) license or Professional Geologist (PG) license.
- Experience working on utility or electrical utility projects.
- Field experience in performing geotechnical construction observations or inspections.
- Experience with ASTM standards related to geotechnical engineering, including work in soils lab testing.
- Strong computer skills with the ability to leverage Microsoft Office, engineering applications, and AI-powered tools to improve productivity, analysis, and technical documentation.
Additional Information
- This position’s work mode is hybrid. The employee will report to an SCE facility for a set number of days with the option to work remotely on the remaining days. Unless otherwise noted, employees are required to work and reside in the state of California. Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage. The work mode can be changed based on business needs.

- The primary work location for this position is Pomona, CA.
- Position will require up to 60% traveling and being out in the field throughout the SCE service territory.
- This position has been identified as a NERC/CIP impacted position - Prior to being hired, the successful candidate must pass a Personnel Risk Assessment (PRA) or Background Investigation. Once hired, the candidate must complete specified training prior to gaining un-escorted access to assigned work location and performing necessary job duties.
