The Calibration Technician 3 supports the calibration, adjustment, verification, documentation, and ongoing reliability of critical inspection, measurement, and test equipment in a highly regulated medical device manufacturing environment. This role involves hands-on calibration work across a broad range of measurement technologies, rigorous review of internal and external calibration documentation, and close collaboration with technical and quality-focused teams to ensure equipment meets required specifications, internal procedures, and applicable quality system requirements.
Responsibilities
- Perform precision calibration, adjustment, and verification of electronic, mechanical, dimensional, pressure, temperature, humidity, and thermal measurement equipment.
- Conduct calibration and maintenance activities that support equipment accuracy, reliability, and operational readiness.
- Review internal and external calibration certificates, service reports, and supporting documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with required specifications and quality procedures.
- Maintain accurate calibration records, equipment history files, and associated quality documentation in accordance with applicable quality system requirements.
- Troubleshoot calibration-related discrepancies and equipment performance issues, diagnosing root causes and implementing corrective actions that improve measurement accuracy and equipment reliability.
- Support root cause analysis and corrective actions related to calibration or measurement accuracy in collaboration with Quality, Engineering, and other technical teams.
- Coordinate equipment servicing and calibration activities with internal stakeholders and external service providers to ensure timely completion and minimal disruption to operations.
- Collaborate closely with Manufacturing, Quality Assurance, Engineering, Maintenance, Facilities, and Research and Development on calibration-related needs and projects.
- Participate in meetings focused on calibration processes, equipment performance, and process improvements, contributing insights based on experience and technical knowledge.
- Support proprietary calibration processes developed specifically for specialized products, equipment, and internal procedures.
- Assist with preventative maintenance activities associated with calibrated equipment to help sustain long-term reliability and readiness.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives related to calibration practices, documentation, and equipment control.
- Document test results clearly and accurately, and communicate findings to Quality, Engineering, Manufacturing, and other technical functions.
- Use computer-based systems, including Microsoft Office and equipment management tools, to manage calibration data, certificates, and equipment histories.
Essential Skills
- High school diploma with 2 to 4 years of related experience required.
- Targeted experience level of 5 to 7 years performing calibration work in a GxP/GMP-regulated or medical device manufacturing environment.
- Advanced experience performing precision calibration, adjustment, and verification of electronic, mechanical, dimensional, pressure, temperature, humidity, and thermal measurement equipment.
- Strong equipment troubleshooting skills, including the ability to investigate calibration discrepancies, diagnose equipment issues, support root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions that improve measurement accuracy and equipment reliability.
- Working knowledge of cGMP requirements and experience performing calibration work in a GxP, GMP, pharmaceutical, medical device, or similarly regulated environment.
- Familiarity with 21 CFR Part 820, including equipment control, documentation, and quality system requirements.
- Experience reviewing calibration certificates and service reports, confirming that specifications and documentation requirements have been met, and maintaining accurate equipment histories and calibration records.
- Hands-on experience calibrating temperature, humidity, pressure, dimensional, thermal, electronic, and mechanical equipment.
- Clear verbal communication skills and strong technical writing ability for documenting test results and calibration activities.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with Quality Assurance, Engineering, Manufacturing, Maintenance, Facilities, and Research and Development teams.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Windows-based systems.
- Ability to stand for extended periods, walk between facilities, and independently lift equipment weighing up to 20 pounds.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Pharmaceutical industry experience is highly preferred.
- Experience in a medical device or similarly regulated manufacturing environment is strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with IBM Maximo or similar equipment management systems is preferred.
- ASQ Certified Calibration Technician certification is a plus, but not required.
- Demonstrated calibration accomplishments, increasing responsibility, and clear career progression, rather than only listing generic duties, are strongly valued.
- Experience with certificate review, preventative maintenance, root cause analysis, and corrective action in a regulated environment.
- Ability to contribute to process improvement discussions related to calibration practices and equipment management.
- Comfort working with a wide range of measurement technologies, including temperature, humidity, pressure, dimensional, thermal, mechanical, and electronic disciplines.
Work Environment
This position is based onsite in a medical device and regulated manufacturing environment in San Diego, CA. The role follows a standard schedule of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., totaling 40 hours per week, with occasional overtime available or required depending on business needs. Work is hands-on with inspection, measurement, calibration, and test equipment, and involves a mix of equipment calibration, certificate review, documentation, troubleshooting, maintenance support, and participation in process improvement activities. The work may require standing for extended periods, walking between facilities, and lifting equipment weighing up to 20 pounds. The calibration technician works within a small calibration and quality support team and has regular onsite collaboration with Engineering, Maintenance, Facilities, Quality Assurance, Manufacturing, and Research and Development. The environment is highly regulated and governed by internal quality procedures, cGMP guidelines, and 21 CFR Part 820 requirements, offering exposure to both standard calibration disciplines and proprietary calibration processes, as well as the potential for assignment extension and conversion to a full-time role.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $35.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
