Job Title: Quality Engineer Job Description
The Quality Engineer is responsible for ensuring that products and processes adhere to internal quality standards and meet customer, regulatory, and industry requirements. This role collaborates closely with manufacturing, engineering, and operations teams to drive continuous improvement, reduce defects, and foster a strong quality culture.
Responsibilities
- Manage all internal and external quality issues from both customers and suppliers as assigned.
- Review and update required documentation.
- Communicate with customers on issues regarding product quality and navigate OEM portals.
- Participate in the implementation and effectiveness of customer-related corrective actions and aid in investigating and responding to customer complaints regarding product quality.
- Ensure best practices are followed throughout the design process.
- Conduct process audits to ensure accuracy of paperwork and that inspection aids are present, meeting the line process flow.
- Ensure that the requirements of the Control Plan are being fulfilled.
- Develop and obtain customer-approved boundary samples and maintain these samples throughout the production cycle.
- Support training when necessary, such as with boundary samples, quality alerts, and SPC.
- Responsible for scrap reduction initiatives related to reduction in Risk Prior Numbers (RPN).
- Participate in pre-launch programs with regard to design and specifications required.
- Ensure timely closure of engineering change action items.
- Manage containment activities both internally and externally.
- Assess manufacturing issues to ensure quality systems and error proofing are not compromised.
- Review component drawings and understand the application requirements for each component.
- Maintain control of rejected parts in the plant hold area as per the Nonconforming Material Process (NCM).
- Review warranty returns, follow up with customers, and provide analysis of data as required.
- Review and analyze dimensional data from first piece layouts, gauge R&R, and capability studies.
Essential Skills
- 3-5 years of experience as a Quality Engineer with Automotive Tier 1 High Volume Manufacturing Suppliers.
- Expertise in automotive plastics or automotive lighting, specifically mid to large size plastic parts for interior or exterior.
- Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline.
- Proficiency in Core Quality Tools/Methodologies: APQP, SPC, MSA, FMEA, PPAP, Control Plans, Process Flows, Root Cause Analysis, and Practical Problem Solving.
- Proficiency in and learning of Business Operating Systems (e.g., IATF, IMDS, QSI, OEM Customer requirements).
- Knowledge of basic concepts of design output, metrology, and instrumentation.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in automotive exterior lighting.
- Knowledge of electronics.
- American Society for Quality (ASQ) Certification.
- Experience directly supporting GM programs.
Work Environment
The position is based in a fast-paced automotive manufacturing plant environment, which includes office space.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract position based out of Plymouth, MI.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $40.87 - $45.67/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
