Electrical Design Engineer – BESS & Solar PV Projects

This is a critical role, working in close conjunction with the Head of Project Delivery and Head of Power Business, to lead Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and solar projects delivery and operations, both ground-mounted and rooftop, offsite as well as onsite projects, primarily in India but also in Southeast Asia.

Job Summary:

The person will be responsible for reviewing and validating electrical system designs, energy yield/performance assessments, and technical submissions from EPC contractors, ensuring compliance, safety, and execution quality across both Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and Solar PV scopes. Experienced in Design Engineering of Standalone & Hybrid BESS Projects as well as Rooftop, Carport & Ground Mount Solar PV Projects, and deployed flexibly across both as project requirements dictate.

Key Responsibilities:

• Review and validate BESS electrical system designs including SLDs, PCS/inverter configurations, DC/AC architecture, battery rack layouts, and cable schedules;

• Conduct site surveys and assess client load profiles for solar PV system sizing;

• Evaluate BESS sizing, C-rate selection, augmentation strategy, and degradation/SOH studies using tools such as HOMER Pro, ETAP, or similar;

• Perform energy yield assessments using tools like PVsyst or Helioscope & similar;

• Assess BMS and EMS/PCS integration, thermal management, and fire detection & suppression systems (NFPA 855, UL 9540A) for containerised/skid-mounted BESS;

• Review solar PV electrical system designs including SLDs, layouts, cable schedules, and protection schemes;

• Validate EPC submissions for BESS compliance with international and local electrical codes and safety standards (IEC 62933, IEEE, UL, IS);

• Evaluate transformer sizing, inverter configurations, and earthing systems for solar PV, along with power system studies;

• Conduct technical due diligence, risk assessments, and FAT/SAT protocols for battery, PCS, and control system components;

• Ensure proper integration of electrical systems with civil and structural designs across BESS and solar PV scopes;

• Review grid interconnection designs for hybrid solar-plus-storage and standalone BESS assets, including SCADA systems and metering arrangements;

• Prepare and enforce strong MQAP’s, FAT’s, FQAP’s, robust testing practices & reporting framework across BESS and solar PV projects;

• Support feasibility screening, energy arbitrage/ancillary services modelling, and pre-sales technical evaluation for storage projects;

• Maintain documentation and support audits and reporting processes;

• Monitor BESS site execution plans and provide EPC feedback on constructability, quality, and safety through regular site visits during construction; and

• Work closely with Owner’s Engineers, Lender’s Engineers, technology OEMs, and Consultants on BESS technical matters.

Other Position requirements

• Job located in Pune (India);

• Travelling in India, and occasionally in Southeast Asia;

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Renewable Energy, or related field;

• 5-7 years successful experience in electrical engineering roles spanning BESS, solar PV, or other renewable energy projects;

• Strong knowledge of BESS technologies (Li-ion chemistries, PCS, BMS, EMS) and solar PV systems, along with grid integration, protection coordination, and energy yield/storage optimization;

• Spirit of dedication and teamwork;

• Resourceful and self-driven;

• Prior involvement in projects across Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines is a plus;

• Familiarity with international standards (IS, IEC, IEEE) and regional electrical practices;

• Exposure to Wind Power projects will be considered an added advantage; and

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
