About this role

The position

Sympower is looking for a Head of Origination to lead and accelerate growth in large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across our active markets – the Nordics and Greece – and into new markets, across Europe. As the energy transition accelerates, we have evolved beyond traditional demand-side response to become a leading route-to-market provider and optimiser for grid-scale BESS assets, and BESS is now Sympower’s principal growth area.

The Head of Origination leads Sympower’s origination function and is responsible for building, qualifying, and closing a high-quality pipeline of large-scale BESS projects for Sympower’s route-to-market and optimisation services, across the full set of commercial structures we offer, including revenue share, and floor structures. You will lead the origination team, own senior relationships with developers, infrastructure investors, banks, insurers and utilities, and personally lead the most complex, non-standard deal processes from first engagement through contract execution and work closely with our Regional Directors who bring country specific knowledge and network.

Reporting to the CEO, this is a highly external-facing, commercially-driven leadership role with accountability for the origination function’s pipeline, team and operating model, and for signed contracts that meet Sympower’s strategic, risk, and return objectives.

Our headquarters are in Amsterdam, and our preference is for the Head of Origination to be based there. We are open to remote working arrangements for the right candidate, with regular travel to Amsterdam and across Sympower’s active and new markets.

What you will do

Your role is to drive the commercial success of Sympower’s BESS product offering.

- Origination and go-to-market (GTM)

Own and execute Sympower’s BESS origination strategy across our active and expansion markets: prioritise markets, counterparty segments, and target project profiles in line with company strategy.
- Build and manage a high-value pipeline of BESS opportunities (typically utility-scale), from initial sourcing to contract signature.
- Develop and deepen senior relationships with developers, IPPs, utilities, infrastructure funds, insurers, financial counterparties and other key ecosystem partners to drive repeatable deal flow.
- Represent Sympower at major international conferences to reinforce our position as one of Europe’s leading BESS optimisers.
- Maintain a disciplined funnel: qualification criteria, pipeline hygiene, and clear forecasting of MW/MWh and expected close timelines, reported to the CEO and Supervisory Board.

- Commercial structuring and negotiation

Lead commercial structuring and negotiation for route-to-market agreements across various revenue-support structures.
- Drive early alignment on “bankability”: identify lender, investor, guarantor and insurer requirements, conditions precedent, and risk allocation.
- Partner closely with internal teams (Trading, Finance and Legal) on pricing, deal structuring and risk analysis, and ensure agreed terms carry through to contract.
- Own key commercial outputs: heads of terms, term sheets, commercial schedules, and pricing narratives, ensuring clarity and consistency from draft to signature.

- Counterparty and framework origination

Originate and manage framework agreements with financial counterparties, with appropriate protections.
- Run structured counterparty processes: RFQs, exclusivity arrangements and staged commitments.

- Market intelligence into Trading

Provide structured market feedback to Trading: price levels, structures being transacted, competitor capability and customer requirements.
- Contribute external benchmarks on revenue capture to inform pricing and performance assessment.

- Team leadership and strategic influence

Lead, develop and grow the origination team (currently three people): set priorities, allocate transactions, and coach team members through complex deals.
- Build the function’s tools and ways of working: pipeline tracking, reusable commercial materials, and reporting cadence.
- Overall responsibility for the pipeline, ensuring internal milestones and sign-off gates are met, and owning reporting and escalations to the CEO.
- Act as a trusted commercial leader internally, representing BESS origination to the Board and Leadership Team and bringing market insight, competitor awareness, and structured recommendations to senior stakeholders.
- Collaborate with Sympower’s Data Science and Engineering teams to ensure our technical roadmap aligns with evolving market demands and regulatory shifts.

Requirements

What you will need

- 10+ years of experience in energy or power markets, with 6+ years in origination, commercial development, or structured transactions and 3+ years of direct experience with grid-scale BESS deals.
- Proven track record of originating, structuring and closing complex, high-value contracts with sophisticated counterparties (developers, IPPs, utilities, infrastructure funds, financial institutions).
- Strong understanding of battery storage economics, revenue stacks, and commercial deal structures.
- Experience leading and developing a commercial team, with the ability to direct analytical and implementation support and to run multiple live transactions in parallel across markets.
- Solid knowledge of electricity markets; energy trading experience is a strong plus.
- Strong communication skills in English.
- Passion for the energy transition and motivation to work in a mission-driven organisation.
