I&C Design Engineer | Principal Engineer

Brown Federal Services is seeking an experienced Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Design Engineer to support engineering activities at the Savannah River Site (SRS) in Aiken, South Carolina .

This is a senior-level engineering position supporting the analysis, development, and implementation of instrumentation and controls designs within a highly regulated environment. The ideal candidate will bring significant hands-on I&C design experience within the nuclear or process chemical industry, including process control instrumentation, PLCs, distributed control systems, and engineering design documentation.

Key Responsibilities

- Provide I&C design engineering support for Savannah River Site projects.

- Perform engineering analysis, field walkdowns, and design development.

- Develop and maintain engineering design documents, including:

Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)

- Control logics

- Loop diagrams

- Instrument indices

- Setpoint lists

- Instrument specifications

- Control valve specifications

- DCS and PLC designs

- Instrument location and installation designs

- Panel layouts

- Review vendor drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.

- Develop effective engineering solutions for complex technical challenges.

- Apply advanced engineering principles and practices to I&C systems and designs.

- Ensure engineering deliverables comply with applicable project, site, industry, and regulatory requirements.

- Coordinate with engineering, construction, project management, vendors, and other technical stakeholders.

- Provide technical guidance and support to other engineering professionals.

- Prepare technical reports, recommendations, calculations, and other engineering documentation.

- Perform engineering services in accordance with Savannah River Site processes and procedures.

- Conduct field walkdowns to verify existing conditions and support engineering design activities.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet one of the following education and experience combinations:

- Ph.D. in an applicable engineering or science discipline with at least 5 years of relevant experience

- Master's degree in an applicable engineering or science discipline with at least 8 years of relevant experience

- Bachelor's degree in an applicable engineering or science discipline with at least 10 years of relevant experience

For this assignment, candidates must also possess a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or I&C Engineering OR current Professional Engineer (PE) registration in one of these disciplines .

Experience

- Minimum of 10 years of direct I&C design experience within the last 15 years

- I&C design experience must be within the nuclear or process chemical industry

- Demonstrated design experience with process control instrumentation

- Demonstrated experience designing and working with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)

- Demonstrated experience with Distributed Control Systems (DCS)

- Experience developing I&C engineering drawings and design documentation

- Experience with P&IDs, control logic, loop diagrams, instrument indices, and setpoint lists

- Experience developing instrument and control valve specifications

- Experience with instrument location, installation design, and panel layouts

- Experience performing engineering analysis and field walkdowns

- Proficiency with MicroStation 2D CADD is required

- Ability to develop, review, and document complex engineering solutions

Preferred Qualifications

- Previous experience supporting DOE, NNSA, nuclear, or other highly regulated facilities

- Previous Savannah River Site experience

- Professional Engineer registration in an applicable engineering discipline

- Candidates who have held an active DOE L or Q clearance within the previous two years are preferred

Security Clearance

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance .

An active DOE Q clearance is not required at the time of hire or initial assignment . The selected candidate will be instructed when to begin the clearance process based on specific work assignments.

Work Schedule

This position is expected to work approximately 40 hours per week. Work schedules may include:

- 5/8 schedule

- 4/10 schedule

- 9/80 schedule

Overtime may occasionally be required to meet project deliverables.

Physical / Field Requirements

This position requires regular field interaction, including weekly job-site walkdowns. Candidates must be able to:

- Navigate active construction sites and uneven surfaces

- Walk distances exceeding one-half mile

- Climb ladders to access work areas

- Access remote or active construction areas

- Wear required personal protective equipment and protective clothing
