Reports to:  Manager, Radiation Safety Services
Hours:  37.5 hours per week
Salary Range: $37.47 - $56.21 per hour
Shifts:  5 days per week, may include evenings and weekends
Status:  Temporary Full Time (20 months)

Position Summary
The Radiation Protection Technologist is designated to provide a number of radiation related services within the University Health Network, Sinai Health Systems and Women’s College Hospital (and affiliated locations).  The principle responsibilities of the Radiation Protection Technologist include: maintaining conformance with x-ray safety regulations, fulfill the operational requirements of the Radiation Protection Program, ensure patient and worker safety in the presence of x-ray equipment and ionizing x-ray radiation, working in compliance of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and its regulations, reporting hazards, deficiencies and contraventions of the Act.

Duties

- Ensures compliance with the radiation protection program in accordance with the x-ray safety regulations and corporate x-ray safety polices;
- Supports the program to ensure compliance of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and its regulations, reporting hazards, deficiencies and contraventions of the Act, in a timely manner;
- Providing general guidance on standards for radiation protection to all staff in radiation work areas;
- Assisting in the management of a comprehensive electronic database of x-ray safety related activities and items (i.e. x-ray worker dosimetry program, lead PPE QC database management)
- Assists in reviewing radiation shielding plans and assesses the installation of shielding for medical uses of x-ray, dental and non-medical uses of x-ray
- Conducts conformance audits (Compliance Inspections) at periodic intervals to ensure compliance with regulations, standards and policies.  Drafts and reviews inspection reports and recommended action items to resolve non-conformances.
- Develops and maintains the lead PPE inventory database and QC program, and provides standards for lead PPE purchase and quality control.
- Leads and/or promotes investigation(s) into root causes of incidents involving x-ray use or x-ray equipment.
- Leads the x-ray worker dosimetry monitoring program, including issuing dosimetry, reviewing dosimeter reports, provides results for worker review and investigates dose anomalies.
- Acting as a first contact on internal radiation matters

Qualifications

- Completion of a bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific or imaging discipline (i.e. Radiography), or recognized equivalent
- 3 - 5 years of recent, related professional operational x-ray safety experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
- Minimum 3 years in-depth experience in applied knowledge of government regulations pertaining to the use of x-ray equipment, preferred
- Ability to pay critical attention to detail to facilitate accuracy and completeness in the work process
- Excellent interpersonal, report writing and communication skills
- Excellent problem recognition and problem-solving skills
- Effective organizational and time management skills; ability to organize work and set priorities
- Ability to work in a self-directed manner
- Proficiency with Excel, PowerPoint and Word and database applications
- Experience with teaching and training of staff, preferred
- X-ray Safety Officer Certification, an asset 
- Previous experience as a Medical Radiation Technologist or NEW (Nuclear Energy Worker), an asset
