Trades Utility Technician or Senior Trades Utility Technician

The University of Virginia's Health System Physical Plant invites applications for a Trades Utility Technician or a Senior Trades Utility Technician. The position will be filled either as a Trades Utility Technician or Senior Trades Utility Technician level depending on the credentials and experience of the finalist selected.

Trades Utility Technicians support the work of licensed journey level mechanics, seniors, and supervisors while learning on the job. They help ensure the highest quality trade products for the University and Medical Center. Through their work and on-the-job training, they become skilled and may become certified in a licensed and non-licensed trade. Training is varied and may consist of rotations throughout the department to provide a broad range of skills. Trades Utility Technicians function in a learning capacity and operate under direct supervision.

Senior Trades Utility Technicians provide support to zone mechanics and other employees in support of zone maintenance. The incumbent supports Facilities Management's goal of providing consistent, cost-effective and reliable maintenance and service to the University facilities. The Senior Trades Utility Technician performs skilled repair and maintenance tasks in one or more specialized trades/utilities areas and performs semi-skilled, general repair and maintenance tasks in other trades/utilities areas. This work may be performed more independently based on the individual’s experience and maintenance/repair service needs.

Duties for Trades Utility Technician Include :

- Assist skilled journey level mechanics in performing routine system maintenance, preventative maintenance, building, construction, equipment repairs, assessing problems, undertaking corrective actions, and site cleanup.
- Respond to emergency calls, including nights and weekends, as needed.
- Communicate with customers regarding the status of work order, providing additional support and problem solving, as needed.
- Perform all work in accordance with safety rules and procedures, such as OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations.
- Develop an increasing familiarity with the skills and best practices of assigned trade.
- Actively participate in classroom and on-the-job training.
- In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Duties for the Senior Trades Utility Technician Include:

- Assist skilled journey-level mechanics in performing routine system maintenance, preventative maintenance, building, construction, equipment repairs, assessing problems, undertaking corrective actions, and site cleanup. Incumbent can address specialized areas within a specific trade, such as quality and temperature control.
- Develop an increasing knowledge of types of material and equipment used for the various utility systems involved in University projects.
- Maintain accurate records on time tickets, job requests, and work orders.
- Determine material and equipment for specific jobs, as well as initiate purchase orders.
- Maintain compliance with OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations. Use personal safety equipment as instructed, and act in accordance with safety guidelines.
- Meet with and respond to customer requests on work status in coordination with the supervisor.
- In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Required Qualifications for Trades Utility Technician:

- Previous experience in a building trade preferred
- Valid Driver's License

Required Qualifications for Senior Trades Utility Technician:

- A minimum of four [4] years of work experience in at least one building trade. Experience working in a hospital setting is preferred.
- Valid Driver's License

For this position, the selected candidate will need to complete the required background checks, including a health screen prior to their start date.

Compensation:

Anticipated Hiring Range for Trades Utility Technician: $18.00 - $22.00 per hour ($37,440 - $45,760 Annually).

Anticipated Hiring Range for   Senior Trades Utility Technician: $22.00 - $26.00 per hour ($45,760 - $54,080 Annually

Physical Demands :

Requires regular walking, standing, kneeling, crawling, squatting, and climbing ladders or stairs, lifting and carrying of various weights. Repetitive motion for grasping, pulling, pushing, and operating hand and power tools; work may occur in a variety of indoor and outdoor conditions and environments.
