Exercise Physiologist

We're looking for an exercise physiologist to join our team at the Exercise Physiology Core Lab (EPCL) at UVA School of Medicine. If you love the science of human performance and metabolism just as much as you love working directly with people — patients, athletes, students, and everyone in between — we'd love to hear from you.

Our lab supports clinical research in exercise science, body composition, and metabolism, and we also serve our broader community: providing fitness testing and consultation, participating in School of Medicine outreach, and mentoring the next generation of exercise scientists and clinicians. It's a role with real variety — one day you might be running a CPET on a clinical research subject, the next you're helping a community member get started with exercise, and the next you're teaching a student how to measure an exercise blood pressure.

What You'll Bring

You're comfortable with exercise telemetry and other monitoring and have a working knowledge of 12-lead ECG interpretation. You have experience with exercise prescription and supervision.

You're detail-oriented, genuinely curious, and always willing to learn something new. You know how to communicate clearly, warmly, and with confidence to all who enter the lab.

What You'll Do (with training)

- Perform CPETs, body composition testing, and resting metabolism assessments

- Support stress echo protocols

- Supervise exercise training sessions

- Enter and assess research data

- Help lead seminars and shape student experiences in the lab

- Maintain testing equipment

Many of the research subjects we work with are managing cardiovascular conditions, diabetes, or cancer. The community members who come through our doors for testing and consultation span the full spectrum — from serious athletes fine-tuning their training to people just beginning their health and fitness journey. What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate will have a college degree in exercise physiology or a related field (master's preferred), with prior experience in exercise testing and supervision. We'll also want excellent professional references, and ACLS certification will be expected within 6 months of hire.  This position will be filled at either a technician or specialist level depending on experience and qualifications.

This is a dynamic autonomous role — it calls for strong clinical judgment, excellent communication, and a genuine desire to make every person who walks through our doors feel well cared for.

Minimum Requirements:

Technician-

- Education : Associate's degree required; may accept equivalent combination of experience, education, certification in lieu of degree.

- Experience : 2+ years of lab experience which may include student experience.

- ACLS certification will be expected within 6 months of hire.

Specialist-

- Education: Bachelor's degree in exercise science or a related health field

- Experience: At least one year of relevant experience; a master's degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience

- ACLS certification will be expected within 6 months of hire.

Anticipated Compensation: $21.15 - $25/hour ($44 - $52k annually).

Physical Demands : This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.

- This position is also open to a part-time benefited schedule with a minimum of 30 hours per week; work schedule will be determined at the department’s discretion.
