Product Functional Test Mechanical Tech - Level II - SHOP

Job Summary

Supports engine and product functional testing by preparing, installing, operating, and maintaining test articles, test stands, fixtures, rigs, instrumentation, and laboratory equipment. The role performs engine installation and removal, assembly and disassembly, test setup, basic troubleshooting, and test execution in accordance with approved test plans, engineering standards, quality requirements, and safety procedures.

The position works closely with engineers, project teams, technicians, and other stakeholders to ensure reliable test execution, accurate data acquisition, equipment availability, and timely resolution of test-related issues. The role may support extended or 24/7 test operations and contributes to continuous improvement, data quality, housekeeping, and a safe laboratory environment.

Key Responsibilities

Engine & Product Test Operations

- Conduct and monitor engine and product tests in accordance with approved test plans, procedures, methodologies, and engineering requirements.
- Prepare test articles, engines, fixtures, rigs, instrumentation, and associated equipment for testing.
- Assemble and disassemble engines and test articles as required by test requirements.
- Install and remove engines in test cells and perform required test-cell-related modifications.
- Install instrumentation on test articles in accordance with applicable engineering standards and test requirements.
- Perform test stand installation, setup, configuration, and basic troubleshooting.
- Demonstrate an understanding of engine and product functionality to identify conditions that may affect test validity and results.
- Support test activities across extended operating hours, including 24/7 test operations when required.

Test Cell & Laboratory Equipment

- Operate and maintain engine test cell systems and laboratory equipment to ensure reliable test execution.
- Develop working knowledge of test cell functions, equipment capabilities, instrumentation, and measurement systems.
- Perform preliminary troubleshooting of test-cell, engine, instrumentation, and test equipment issues.
- Identify equipment abnormalities and coordinate with appropriate engineering or maintenance resources for resolution.
- Support the upkeep, calibration, and maintenance of laboratory and test equipment.
- Ensure test equipment and fixtures are properly prepared and available for scheduled testing.

Data Acquisition & Reporting

- Prepare samples and test articles and verify equipment readiness and calibration before testing.
- Collect reliable test data in accordance with approved procedures and test plans.
- Monitor test parameters and identify potential data quality issues during testing.
- Document test setup, instrumentation, test conditions, observations, and results accurately.
- Prepare basic test documentation and reports that clearly communicate test methods, results, and observations.
- Ensure test data is complete, accurate, traceable, and suitable for engineering analysis.

Safety, Quality & Compliance

- Follow all applicable Health, Safety, Environmental, Quality Management System (QMS), and laboratory requirements.
- Apply LOTO procedures and other applicable safety controls while working on engines, test cells, and laboratory equipment.
- Support risk assessments and comply with approved risk mitigation measures before and during testing.
- Maintain good housekeeping and safe working conditions within the test area.
- Identify and report unsafe conditions, equipment risks, and potential test-related hazards.
- Ensure testing and laboratory activities comply with established QMS processes and engineering standards.
- Participate in audits, TBWS activities, and other safety and quality improvement initiatives.

Problem Solving & Continuous Improvement

- Perform preliminary troubleshooting of engine, test-cell, instrumentation, and equipment issues.
- Apply systematic problem-solving techniques to identify assignable causes and support implementation of corrective actions.
- Escalate complex technical issues to the appropriate engineering or maintenance teams.
- Identify opportunities to improve test setup, equipment reliability, data quality, and test execution efficiency.
- Participate in Kaizen, TBWS, and other continuous improvement activities.
- Support preventive and predictive maintenance activities for test equipment and laboratory systems.

Stakeholder & Team Collaboration

- Communicate effectively with project managers, engineers, technicians, and other stakeholders regarding test status, issues, results, and requirements.
- Coordinate test preparation and execution activities to meet project schedules and priorities.
- Provide timely updates on test progress, equipment issues, and potential delays.
- Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to resolve test-related issues and maintain test schedules.

Skills

- Good understanding of engine test cell operations and test procedures.
- Working knowledge of engine components, systems, assembly, and disassembly.
- Hands-on experience with engine installation and removal from test cells.
- Ability to prepare engines and test articles for functional testing.
- Knowledge of test cell functions, test parameters, fixtures, rigs, and associated laboratory equipment.
- Experience with test instrumentation, measurement equipment, data acquisition, and data logging systems.
- Basic troubleshooting skills for engines, test cells, instrumentation, and test equipment.
- Ability to interpret test plans, work instructions, technical documentation, and engineering requirements.
- Working knowledge of QMS requirements, safety practices, risk assessment, and LOTO procedures.
- Good housekeeping and equipment maintenance practices.
- Basic knowledge of preventive and predictive maintenance.
- Good Excel and general computer skills for test data recording and reporting.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with engineers, technicians, project managers, and cross-functional stakeholders.
- Ability to work flexible hours and support 24/7 test operations when required.

Preferred Technical Skills

- Experience with AVL PUMA or similar engine test cell systems.
- Familiarity with engine test cell instrumentation and control systems.
- Experience with test cell modifications, engine rigging, and instrumentation installation.
- Knowledge of laboratory/test equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Experience participating in TBWS, Kaizen, TPM, or continuous improvement activities.

Experience

- Some relevant work experience with intermediate technical knowledge gained through education, vocational training, apprenticeships, or on-the-job experience is required.
- Experience in engine testing, test cell operations, mechanical testing, laboratory operations, automotive/engine maintenance, or a related technical environment is preferred.
- Hands-on experience with engine assembly/disassembly and installation/removal is preferred.
- Experience preparing and executing engine or product test plans is preferred.
- Experience with test cell equipment, instrumentation, troubleshooting, and maintenance is an advantage.
- Experience working in a quality- and safety-controlled engineering or manufacturing environment is preferred.
- Experience supporting continuous or extended-hours testing, including 24/7 operations, is an advantage.
