Lineman

Provides customer electric service by performing construction, maintenance, repair and troubleshooting of all overhead and underground distribution lines, service lines, sub-transmission lines and substation equipment.

- Constructs and repairs overhead and underground distribution lines.
- Installs and repairs service lines for residential, commercial, and industrial customers according to applicable National Electric Safety Code (NESC) and electric construction standards.
- Installs and repairs transformers.
- Constructs and repairs 46kv sub-transmission lines.
- Performs energized line work on 17 kv and below.
- Operates and maintains specialized line construction and rigging equipment.
- Uses specialized test equipment, such as voltmeters, ammeters, phasing meters and ohmmeters.
- Reads and interprets blueprints, drawings and work orders.
- Reads and interprets traffic control manuals referenced by Decatur Utilities.
- Provides training and assistance to Apprentice Linemen and Crewmen to develop skills associated with line work with emphasis on safety and quality workmanship.
- Communicates with customers and investigates trouble calls.
- Assesses work situations to ensure that all safety policies and procedures are followed.
- May occasionally be assigned lead responsibilities in absence of lead lineman.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

- High School diploma or GED.
- Minimum 6-8 years related work experience in electric utility (4 years as Lineman Apprentice).
- Ability to read, interpret, comprehend and follow documents such as safety rules, National Electric Safety Code, operating and maintenance instructions, drawings and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to interact and effectively communicate with customers, co-workers, supervisors.
- Valid Alabama Driver’s License with Class A CDL; approved Journey Lineworker Certification; CPR/First Aid Certification; Customer Service Skills and applicable safety training.
