JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary/ Objective

East Side House (ESH) is a community resource in the Bronx and Northern Manhattan. ESHs Community Schools programs align with our mission by providing high quality programs and services within community centers and school partnerships.

Reporting to the Community School Director, the Assistant Director – Community Schools supports the development of a high-performing community school partnership where students and families feel supported, community members feel connected, and coordinated resources contribute to successful outcomes. The Assistant Director helps coordinate resources and programs that address key priorities including attendance, behavior, literacy, math, youth and family engagement, and students academic, social-emotional, and health needs. As a member of the Community Schools team, the Assistant Director works in partnership with school leadership, staff, families, community-based organizations, and other stakeholders to carry out the Leadership Teams shared vision and school priorities. This position supervises assigned front-line and/or support staff and supports data-driven attendance interventions, student and family services, enrichment opportunities, and a welcoming school culture.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Community School Director, the Assistant Director – Community Schools will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

- Work in tandem with the school Principal, School Leadership Team (SLT), and Attendance Team to identify student needs and facilitate relationships with internal and external community-based organizations to address those needs.

- Provide ongoing supervision and support for a minimum of two (2) part-time and/or full-time staff and community partners.

- Delegate responsibilities and monitor the effectiveness and completion of tasks performed by workgroups and Community School staff.

- Organize and coordinate a wide range of resources, including use of electronic filing systems, to support student cohorts.

- Utilize positive youth development resources and strategies to improve student attendance, behavior, and/or academic performance.

- Attend partnership school workshops and events to ensure alignment across programs.

- Generate reports on Community School outcomes for various stakeholders.

- Collect, review, and analyze student data to develop strategies, interventions, and continuous improvement plans.

- Coordinate services, programs, and resources that support social-emotional well-being and enrichment for students experiencing attendance and academic challenges.

- Provide social-emotional well-being and enrichment resources, referrals, and program opportunities.

- Develop new partnerships with organizations and programs to support the school community.

- Facilitate workshops for students and families on topics including social services, family services, and enrichment opportunities.

- Build strong relationships with students, families, teachers, school staff, and existing Community Based Organization (CBO) partners.

- Participate in organization-wide professional development, team meetings, and supervision.

- Connect students to prevention, early intervention, and intensive service programs that address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social development.

- Engage families and caregivers in understanding and supporting the education of their youth.

- Engage in and lead crisis intervention, small-group counseling, and individual counseling as appropriate.

- Actively participate in core team meetings, share relevant data, highlight concerns, and contribute to solution development.

- Help create an environment responsive to student and family needs while building a culture of high attendance and achievement.

- Ensure accurate attendance tracking and reporting.

- Prepare a monthly calendar of events, programs, meetings, and activities.

- Use web-based platforms, including Zoom and Google Classroom, to engage participants as needed.

- Monitor participant engagement and safety during remote live sessions when applicable.

- Facilitate wellness checks and calls to families.

- Travel locally during scheduled work hours as needed to support school and program activities.

Qualifications

To perform this position successfully, the Assistant Director – Community Schools must be able to fulfill all the elements of the job description to the highest standard and work well with colleagues in a high-energy and collaborative work environment. Additional qualifications include:

Education / Experience

- Bachelor's Degree in a related field required; Master's Degree preferred.

- At least two (2) years of experience coordinating and/or developing adolescent services and programming with individuals from a wide range of cultural, social, and economic backgrounds.

- Experience with program coordination, management, staff supervision, resource connection, and referral coordination across youth age groups (K–12).

- Strong presentation, written communication, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to represent the organization professionally.

- Ability to work collaboratively with school administration and leadership teams.

- Ability to engage, build relationships, and demonstrate empathy with adolescents.

- Strong organizational skills and ability to coordinate multiple tasks and responsibilities.

- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with staff members and to work efficiently and effectively under pressure.

- Familiarity with social-emotional and trauma-informed practices.

- Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills.

- Demonstrated cultural competence; bilingual Spanish/English preferred.

Clearance

Employees must be clear to work at ESH. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background checks and/or screenings.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position is responsible for supervising and managing the performance of all designated employees assigned to the position within the department.

Physical Demands

This role may involve occasional lifting or moving of items up to 25 pounds and routine use of standard office equipment. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Expected Work Schedule
The work schedule expected for this position is Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., 35 hours per week, as aligned to the needs of the program/service. Occasional Saturdays and holidays may be required. The schedule may be adjusted based on ESHs operational needs, with notice provided whenever possible.
