What We’re Looking For:
Michael Baker International is seeking a Roadway Department Manager to lead our growing transportation practice in Columbus, Ohio. In this leadership role, you will develop and maintain trusted advisor relationships with key clients while driving strategic growth initiatives throughout the region. Working closely with office leadership and transportation teams across the company, you will help shape the vision for Michael Baker's roadway practice, expand our market presence, and mentor the next generation of transportation professionals.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background delivering transportation projects for the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), counties, municipalities, and other public-sector clients. This position offers the opportunity to lead business development efforts, oversee project execution, and play a key role in expanding Michael Baker's transportation footprint across Ohio.
What You’ll Do:
- Lead a team of engineers and designers in the planning, design, and delivery of roadway, highway, and interstate improvement projects for ODOT and local agency clients.
- Deliver projects in alignment with established scope, schedule, budget, and quality objectives.
- Provide technical leadership, oversight, and QA/QC review for transportation projects.
- Lead, mentor, and develop engineering staff while fostering a collaborative and high-performing team environment.
- Oversee department staffing, workload management, budgets, and project schedules.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key client decision-makers and stakeholders throughout Ohio.
- Support strategic planning efforts, identify upcoming opportunities, and position Michael Baker for future growth.
- Lead proposal development, pursuit strategies, and interview presentations to win new work.
- Coordinate resources and project delivery efforts with transportation teams across Michael Baker International.
- Represent the firm through active participation in professional organizations, industry conferences, and transportation-related committees.
What You Need to Succeed:
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required; Ohio PE preferred or ability to obtain reciprocity.
- 10+ years of highway and roadway design experience with progressive leadership responsibilities.
- Demonstrated experience delivering transportation projects for ODOT, counties, municipalities, and other public-sector clients.
- Proven success managing project scope, budget, schedule, quality, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong client relationship management and business development skills.
- Experience mentoring, supervising, and developing engineering staff.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including proposal writing, presentations, and public speaking.
- Strong track record of successful project delivery and client satisfaction.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
- Knowledge of alternative delivery methods, including Design-Build, is a plus.
- Established relationships within Ohio's transportation industry are highly desirable.
- Demonstrated leadership within professional organizations and the transportation community.
- Strong engineering judgment with a commitment to quality, innovation, and financial performance.
Compensation
The approximate compensation range for this position is $140,000 to $194,000. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
