The Opportunity
Zoox's mission is to build a purpose-built robotaxi that gives the world a better way to ride. Every line of that autonomous driving software has to be compiled, tested, and validated reliably at scale before it ever reaches the road. You'll join the team that owns the build infrastructure making that possible: maintaining and evolving our Bazel-based build system in a large, multi-language monorepo used by hundreds of engineers.
As a key contributor, you will take ownership of the build ecosystem supporting our rapidly expanding, safety-critical autonomous vehicle software. This role entails configuring and upgrading compilers, profiling and optimizing build pipelines, and serving as the primary expert for all build-related inquiries. While we have established a robust foundation using Bazel in a monorepo along with a remote build farm and cache, our goal is to elevate this into a world-class development experience. We are searching for a passionate engineer with a strong curiosity for optimizing build speeds and a commitment to empowering developers through metrics and advanced tooling within our fast-paced culture.
In this role, you will:
- Own CI performance, cost efficiency, and reliability end-to-end, at thousands of builds a day and growing
- Rethink CI failure analysis, triage, developer support, and incident response with modern AI tools, shifting first-line work off human on-call
- Work cross-functionally to find where integration slows down and fix it at the platform level, and enable teams to make their CI efficient and reliable
- Set the technical bar for how CI is built and operated, and mentor the engineers around you
Qualifications
- 5+ years of software engineering and programming experience, including significant experience in platform, infrastructure, or developer tooling
- Hands-on experience operating a distributed CI system at scale, Buildkite preferred; Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or similar
- Working familiarity with a modern build system such as Bazel, and with how caching and remote execution interact with CI
- Solid knowledge of version control systems such as Git
- Self-driven and motivated with a strong work ethic and passion for problem solving
Bonus Qualifications
- Cloud compute cost analysis and fleet economics (AWS EC2 instance families, spot, right-sizing)
- Experience dealing with the operational challenges of large monorepos and merge queues
- Experience in "infrastructure as code" tools like Terraform, Helm, and Ansible, and good knowledge of Kubernetes and containers

There are three major components to compensation for this position: salary, Amazon Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), and Zoox Stock Appreciation Rights. A sign-on bonus may be offered as part of the compensation package. The listed range applies only to the base salary. Compensation will vary based on geographic location and level. Leveling, as well as positioning within a level, is determined by a range of factors, including, but not limited to, a candidate's relevant years of experience, domain knowledge, and interview performance. The salary range listed in this posting is representative of the range of levels Zoox is considering for this position.
