Job Title: Gastroenterologist Job Description
The Gastroenterologist evaluates, diagnoses, and treats patients with a wide range of gastrointestinal and liver disorders. This physician performs and interprets gastrointestinal procedures, including colonoscopies and upper endoscopies (EGD), and develops individualized treatment plans based on clinical findings. The role involves ordering and interpreting laboratory tests, imaging studies, and pathology reports, managing both acute and chronic GI conditions, and providing ongoing consultation and follow-up care. The Gastroenterologist educates patients and families about diagnoses, treatment options, and preventive care, maintains accurate documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR), collaborates closely with other healthcare providers, and participates in quality improvement initiatives while maintaining compliance with healthcare regulations and standards.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients with gastrointestinal and liver disorders in both outpatient and procedural settings.
- Perform and interpret gastrointestinal procedures, including colonoscopies and upper endoscopies (EGD), ensuring high-quality and safe patient care.
- Develop and implement individualized treatment plans based on clinical evaluation, diagnostic testing, and patient preferences.
- Order and interpret laboratory tests, imaging studies, and pathology reports to guide diagnosis and management.
- Manage acute and chronic gastrointestinal conditions, including GERD, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), hepatitis, liver disease, and gastrointestinal bleeding.
- Provide consultation services to other healthcare providers and offer expert recommendations for complex GI and liver cases.
- Deliver follow-up care, monitoring patient progress and adjusting treatment plans as needed.
- Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment options, procedural risks and benefits, and preventive care strategies.
- Maintain accurate, thorough, and timely documentation within the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Collaborate with primary care physicians, surgeons, oncologists, and other specialists to ensure coordinated and comprehensive patient care.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing patient outcomes, procedural quality, and practice efficiency.
- Ensure ongoing compliance with healthcare regulations, clinical guidelines, and professional standards of practice.
Essential Skills
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree.
- Completion of an accredited Internal Medicine residency program.
- Completion of an accredited Gastroenterology fellowship, typically 3 years after residency.
- Board Certification or Board Eligibility in Gastroenterology through the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM).
- Active state medical license or eligibility for state medical licensure.
- Clinical expertise in the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of gastrointestinal and liver disorders.
- Proficiency in performing and interpreting colonoscopies and upper endoscopies (EGD).
- Ability to develop individualized treatment plans based on clinical data and patient needs.
- Skill in ordering and interpreting laboratory tests, imaging studies, and pathology reports.
- Competence in managing acute and chronic GI conditions, including GERD, IBD, IBS, hepatitis, liver disease, and gastrointestinal bleeding.
- Strong documentation skills with experience using electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
- Effective communication skills for educating patients and families and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.
- Commitment to maintaining compliance with healthcare regulations, clinical guidelines, and quality standards.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Advanced fellowship training in Gastroenterology or Digestive Diseases is a plus.
- Experience with a high-volume procedural practice, including performing 15–20 endoscopic procedures per day, is beneficial.
- Ability to see 8–10 patients per day for consultations and follow-up visits in a clinic setting.
- Bilingual proficiency in Spanish is a plus.
- Demonstrated interest in quality improvement initiatives and practice optimization.
Work Environment
The Gastroenterologist works in a dynamic clinical and procedural environment, splitting time between an operating room/endoscopy suite and an outpatient clinic. Typically, half of the day is spent performing gastrointestinal procedures such as colonoscopies and upper endoscopies, while the other half is devoted to patient consultations and follow-up visits. On average, the physician performs 15–20 procedures per day and sees 8–10 patients in the clinic. The schedule is flexible, with the current team working four days per week, and the option for the physician to work five days per week if preferred. This is a salaried position within a collaborative, multidisciplinary setting that emphasizes coordinated patient care, clinical excellence, and continuous quality improvement.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $500000.00 - $650000.00/yr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
