The opportunity - this is a 2 year fixed term position

Help strengthen the performance and development of AFL umpiring through trusted, evidence-based analysis.

As Umpire Analysis Manager, you will lead the development, delivery and continuous improvement of the AFL’s umpiring analysis program. Based in Melbourne and reporting to the AFL Head of Officiating, you will provide timely insights that support umpire coaching, development, reporting and performance evaluation.

What you’ll own

You will lead a consistent, high-quality approach to umpiring analysis, ensuring performance data and insights are accurate, meaningful and delivered when they matter.

You’ll add value through:

- Leading the design, implementation and continuous improvement of the umpire analysis framework

- Managing the umpire review function at the AFL Review Centre on match days

- Recruiting, training, rostering and coordinating match-day callers and analysts

- Governing umpiring performance data, including its collection, verification, validation and quality assurance

- Producing timely performance reports, rankings and analysis to support umpire coaching and development

- Partnering with AFL Umpiring coaches to support consistent and constructive performance feedback

- Responding to club enquiries and providing informed advice on umpiring decisions

- Working with stakeholders on technology systems used by the Umpiring Department and AFL Review Centre

- Analysing performance trends and the application of the Laws of Australian Football to identify opportunities for improvement

- Using technology, including AI, to improve the efficiency, effectiveness and quality of umpiring analysis

What you’ll bring

- Experience within the AFL industry or another elite sporting environment

- Comprehensive knowledge of AFL football and the Laws of Australian Football

- Experience designing, managing or contributing to performance analysis, coaching or high-performance review systems

- Strong analytical capability, with the ability to interpret performance data and produce meaningful reports and insights

- Experience using AI and performance analysis technology such as R, Excel, Sportscode, Tableau or comparable vision analysis platforms

- Strong written, verbal and presentation skills

- The ability to build credibility and work constructively with a range of internal and external stakeholders

- Sound judgement and a commitment to accurate, consistent and evidence-based analysis

- The ability to work collaboratively while providing responsive and well-informed advice
