POSITION SUMMARY:

Advanced Energy is seeking Firmware Engineering Interns and Co-op students to support development activities across our North American design sites.

In this role, you will work alongside experienced engineers on the design, testing, and implementation of power conversion, controls, and measurement solutions. Interns will have opportunities to gain hands-on experience in product development, laboratory testing, troubleshooting, and engineering analysis.

This position is located in Eden Prairie, MN.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

As an intern, you may have the opportunity to:

- Support firmware development projects as part of a cross-functional engineering team

- Develop, test, and debug embedded software for power conversion and control products

- Assist with implementation of new firmware features and enhancements

- Perform firmware validation and verification testing in both laboratory and production environments

- Troubleshoot embedded systems using laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and multimeters

- Collect, analyze, and document test results

- Support integration of firmware with hardware components and system-level applications

- Assist with implementation and debugging of communication interfaces and protocols

- Participate in software code reviews and design discussions

- Develop technical documentation, test procedures, and engineering reports

- Collaborate with hardware, systems, manufacturing, and test engineering teams

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

- Location: Eden Prairie, MN

- Environment: in office and lab environment

- Hands-on work with embedded systems, development tools, and hardware test equipment

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required

- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in:

- Computer Engineering

- Electrical Engineering

- Software Engineering

- Computer Science

- Electrical and Computer Engineering

- Coursework in embedded systems, microcontrollers, computer architecture, digital design, real-time systems, or related subjects

- Experience programming in C or C++

- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills

- Ability to work independently and as part of a team

- Strong written and verbal communication skills

- Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications

Preferred

Experience with one or more of the following is a plus:

- Embedded software development for microcontrollers or processors

- Real-time operating systems (RTOS)

- Debugging tools such as JTAG, SWD, logic analyzers, or oscilloscopes

- Version control systems such as Git

- Scripting languages such as Python

- Communication protocols including UART, SPI, I²C, CAN, USB, or Ethernet

- Firmware development and debugging using IDEs such as VS Code, Eclipse, Keil, IAR, or MPLAB

- Basic understanding of electronics, digital circuits, and hardware-software integration

- MATLAB, Simulink, or similar engineering and modeling tools

EDUCATION:

- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field

- Junior or senior preferred

- Minimum GPA of 3.0 preferred

COMPENSATION:

As required by multiple state pay transparency laws, Advanced Energy provides a reasonable range of compensation for each job posting. Actual compensation is influenced by an array of factors including, but not limited to, skill set, level of experience, and specific office location. The range of starting pay for this role is $22 to $28 per hour.
