Smoking Cessation Program and Research Center Role

Duke Health, Duke Cancer Institute, and the Department of Medicines Division of Medical Oncology are recruiting a Physician to support Leadership of the Duke Smoking Cessation Program and Research Center.

We are seeking a physician with training in Addiction Medicine, Internal Medicine, Family Practice, or Psychiatry to support leadership of the Duke Smoking Cessation Program and Research Center. The Duke Smoking Cessation Program is a large, nationally recognized intensive tobacco cessation program using a medical model to serve inpatient and outpatients across Duke Health. The Duke Center for Smoking Cessation is a research center with national reputation in pharmacotherapy development.

- Initial time allocation (90% clinical; 10% administrative) with anticipated growth of academic and administrative responsibilities over time.

- The goal is that this position will evolve over time to include a significant leadership role in the clinical program, the research center and our educational programs.

- The research center has had robust and continuous research funding from NIH and from close collaborations with industry partners. Funding for research will be dependent on the applicants research experience and research funding available at the time of hire

- Our clinical program, research center and educational programs do not and will not take funding support of any kind from the tobacco industry.

- Board Certification is required in one of the following: Addiction Medicine, Internal Medicine, Psychiatry or Family Practice

- Focused training or experience in treatment in tobacco is highly valued.

- Research and publication in treatment of tobacco use is highly valued.

- Experience in grant writing and successful grant funding is highly valued.

- Faculty appointment (Regular rank appointment) (e.g. Clinical Instructor, Assistant Professor)

- Disease focus: Tobacco Use with minor focus on comorbid use of other substances (marijuana, alcohol)

- Clinical responsibilities include:

- Outpatient clinic, including telehealth and in-person, managing patients that have failed treatment offered by Advanced Practice Providers or presenting with clinically complex medical or psychiatric histories

- Inpatient consultation at Duke University Hospital, Duke Raleigh Hospital, and Duke Regional Hospital for patients with clinically complex medical or psychiatric histories

- Oversight of a team of approximately 15 Advanced Practice Providers providing inpatient and outpatient care for tobacco cessation. This includes regular chart review, competency development, quality assurance, and protocol standardization.

- Work with Program Director to expand and improve program services.

- Academic responsibilities are expected to expand with available funding to include:

- Clinical research as Co-Investigator or Principal Investigator within the Duke Center for Smoking Cessation

- Education of health professionals through the Duke-UNC Tobacco Treatment Specialist Training Program

- Education of medical residents and medical students on tobacco treatment.
