JOB TITLE: Childcare Support - Casual

REPORTS TO: Family Development Supervisor

JOB PURPOSE

The Families Matter Society of Calgary strives to promote optimal child development and family resilience by helping caregivers learn about early childhood development, by providing concrete supports in times of need, by helping families build strong relationships, and by creating lasting, supportive social networks among families.

The purpose of this role is to provide centre-based childminding to families with children newborn to six while their parents and caregivers attend our parenting support programs.  This role is an integral part of our team to ensure parents and caregivers can have dedicated time to learn new parenting skills while their children and engaged in enriching care from dedicated staff.

HOURS

Childcare shifts are at least 3 hours in length. Shifts are scheduled during the day, but there is a high need for evening and weekend shifts to accommodate programming needs.

LOCATION

Shifts take place at one of our two Family Centres: Horizon (3404 25 St NE) and Midnapore (#101 239 Midpark Way SE) or in the community at a partner agency or offsite event.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Educational and professional requirements

- Some post-secondary training in child development and parenting (Diploma, Certificate, etc.)

Knowledge, Experience and skills requirements

- Belief that children grow and develop through caring, nurturing and child focused interactions.

- Ability to maintain a high-quality environment that protects the health, security, and well-being of children.

- Strong knowledge of early childhood development and building parenting capacity.

- Ability to establish rapport with parents and caregivers.

- Strong oral and written communication skills.

- Self-directed, and able to take initiative.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Program Delivery

- Support to children with various degrees of need in child support environment while caregivers attend programs in another part of the building.

- Establish and maintain a supportive and enriching environment for children and families.

- Use skills to address concerns and implement effective interventions with children, utilizing strength-based strategies through a lens of attachment.

- Support children in the development by providing activities that promote skill and confidence building.

- Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with caregivers.

- Follow individual instructions for children with specific needs, including allergies, medical needs, or behaviour supports.

Session Preparation & Space

- Creatively set up the environment to be engaging for the children attending the program.

- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the space and materials, following checklists provided by the agency.

Administration

- Review child notes ahead of each session to be aware of notes provided by caregivers or facilitators

- Review the communication log ahead of each session and leave appropriate notes of communication at the end of each session.

- Ensure sign in occurs and attendance is tracked for each child at each session

- Following the last session of a class ensure attendance is all logged and provided to the facilitator.

- Complete incident reports timely when appropriate.

Team Collaboration

- Exchange ideas with teammates in the preparation, execution, and wrap up of all sessions.

- Communicate regularly with facilitators in the space for a cohesive session.

- Attend and engage in team meetings to share ideas, use it as an opportunity to reflect, and to bring forward challenges to strengthen the team and agency as a whole.

Health & Safety

- Respond to minor injuries using basic first aid and report incidents according to agency procedure.

- Be aware of safety hazards that arise inside or around the building during shifts and report and concerns to the supervisor.

WAGE

Hourly Wage: $18.00
