About this role

Senior Quantitative Developer

Location: Chicago, IL or New York, NY

Base Salary Range: $200,000 - $275,000

(Base salary is only one part of Group One Trading's total compensation, which includes an annual discretionary bonus.)

THE OPPORTUNITY

Our Senior Quantitative Developers work directly with traders and quantitative researchers to build and improve the pricing, strategy, risk, and execution systems that power our options market-making business. They combine academic ideas with a pragmatic understanding of trader approach and intuition, to deliver critical systems from initial design through deployment and shape the strategic direction of the firm.

THE SKILLSET

Our production environment is primarily heavily-optimized C#, with C++ integrated into especially performance-sensitive components. We value demonstrated engineering ability over experience with a particular language, and we embrace agentic AI workflows as a valuable asset to our engineering approach.

Our ideal Senior Quantitative Developer possesses the following:

- Strong quantitative and analytical skills, including familiarity with probability, statistics, numerical methods, and the evaluation of model or strategy behavior

- Knowledge of options pricing models, implied volatility surfaces, risk measurements, and market microstructure

- Demonstrated ability to work directly with traders and quantitative researchers

- Substantial professional software development experience throughout the full software development lifecycle, including requirements analysis, architecture, implementation, testing, deployment, monitoring, and production support

- Ability to lead technical design discussions, make pragmatic architectural decisions, mentor other developers, and improve engineering standards across the team

- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical and quantitative concepts

- A bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, statistics, or related quantitative fields, or equivalent practical experience

Are you equally comfortable discussing a strategy with a trader, analyzing unexpected model behavior, and diagnosing a production performance issue? Do you take ownership of systems after they are deployed? Can you raise the technical standard of a team while continuing to write and deliver high-quality code? If yes, you may be a strong fit for this Senior Quantitative Developer position.

WHAT TO EXPECT AS A SENIOR QUANTITATIVE DEVELOPER

Within 1 month , you will complete your initial orientation and begin developing a working understanding of our options market-making business, trading strategies, quantitative research process, and production technology environment. You will become familiar with our codebases, historical and real-time data, system architecture, deployment processes, monitoring tools, and risk controls. You will build working relationships with traders, quantitative researchers, developers, and infrastructure engineers, begin participating in technical design and code reviews, and make initial contributions to the production system.

Within 3 months , you will take end-to-end ownership of a meaningful strategy, research, pricing, risk, or trading-system enhancement. You will work directly with developers and quantitative researchers to refine the problem, identify appropriate success criteria, and implement the solution. You will validate your work in non-production testing environments. You will coordinate deployment of your changes with appropriate monitoring and controls, participate effectively in production support, and begin identifying opportunities to improve system performance and maintainability. You will study for and pass the FINRA Series 57 exam, enabling you to independently lead projects that directly impact trading decisions.

Within 6 months , you will be a trusted technical owner for one or more important components of the trading platform. You will independently lead complex projects from initial concept through production operation, make informed architectural and performance tradeoffs, and deliver measurable improvements in trading capability, computational performance, or research productivity. You will proactively address technical debt and operational risk, improve testing and observability, mentor other developers, and help establish engineering practices that allow the team to move quickly without compromising correctness. Your growing understanding of our markets and trading systems will enable you to contribute to the identification and evaluation of new technical and quantitative opportunities.
