Job Title: Construction Superintendent Job Description
The Construction Superintendent oversees the day-to-day management of field operations on ground-up commercial construction projects, ensuring work is completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. This onsite leader coordinates subcontractors, manages project schedules, drives field productivity, and maintains strong communication with project teams, owners, and design partners throughout all phases of construction from sitework through final completion.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage daily field operations for ground-up commercial construction projects from initial sitework through final completion.
- Oversee and coordinate subcontractors to ensure work is sequenced properly, completed on time, and meets project specifications and quality standards.
- Develop, maintain, and manage project schedules, monitoring progress and adjusting activities to keep the project on track.
- Ensure all work complies with safety regulations and company safety standards, promoting a strong safety culture on the jobsite.
- Monitor and control field activities to maintain project budgets, minimizing rework and delays.
- Implement and oversee quality control processes to ensure construction meets design intent, specifications, and high-quality expectations.
- Collaborate closely with project managers, owners, and design partners to address field issues, resolve conflicts, and support timely decision-making.
- Coordinate and manage the installation and integration of complex building systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and structural elements.
- Review construction documents and plans to identify potential issues and provide input on constructability and sequencing.
- Drive productivity in the field by planning daily activities, allocating resources effectively, and ensuring crews have the information and materials they need.
- Document field activities, progress, and issues as required to support project reporting and communication.
- Support final inspections, punch lists, and project closeout to ensure successful completion and turnover.
Essential Skills
- 8+ years of construction experience with at least 3 years in a Superintendent or Lead Superintendent role.
- Proven experience managing ground-up commercial construction projects valued at $10 million or more.
- Experience leading projects from sitework through final completion.
- Strong background in commercial construction and construction management.
- Experience working for a general contractor on projects with demanding schedules and high-quality expectations.
- Subcontractor management skills, including coordination, scheduling, and oversight of multiple trades.
- Construction supervision experience with a focus on field leadership and onsite decision-making.
- Hands-on experience with safety practices and standards on active jobsites.
- Project management capabilities related to field execution and schedule control.
- Knowledge of quality control processes and procedures in commercial construction.
- OSHA 30 certification or equivalent safety training.

- Experience on commercial, institutional, higher education, public sector, healthcare, life sciences, or large-scale private development projects.
- Experience managing complex building systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and structural coordination.

Work Environment
This role is primarily based on an active jobsite, where the Construction Superintendent spends most of the time in the field overseeing daily operations. The work environment involves coordinating multiple trades and activities in a dynamic construction setting, often requiring presence in partially completed structures and outdoor conditions. The superintendent works closely with project management teams, owners, and design partners, using standard construction tools, documentation, and safety equipment while maintaining a professional appearance appropriate for a jobsite and client-facing environment.
Job Type & Location
This is a Permanent position based out of Richmond, VA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $120000.00 - $170000.00/yr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
