Make Cool Stuff (MCS) Lab Student Technicians will work with the Digital Fabrication Specialist in promoting a safe and healthy learning space for First Year Experience (FYE) students learning the elements of digital fabrication. MCS Lab Student Technicians will primarily assist students in their endeavors to better understand digital fabrication techniques, tools while enforcing proper safety protocol when working within the MCS Lab.

Summary of Essential Functions

- Student Technicians are part-time workers who work up to 10 hours per week in the Make Cool Stuff (MCS) Lab digital fabrication lab.
- The position is a year long commitment that will assist the MCS Lab’s Digital Fabrication Specialist with day-to-day operations and promoting a safe working environment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

- Commit to shifts totaling up to 10 hours per week
- Attend mandatory training(s), and professional development workshops when specified by the Digital Fabrication specialist.
- Monitor the lab and its attendants for safe utilization of the lab equipment and space
- Enforce lab rules, proper etiquette and safety guidelines created by the Digital Fabrication Specialist
- Assist students with proper workflow procedures when using MCS Lab equipment
- Monitoring various fabrication machines for proper use and maintenance.
- Machines include 3D Printers and Digital Cutters along with minor fabrication machines such as Sewing Machines and Dremel.
- Communicate issues/difficulties with the lab space and/or equipment when necessary.
- Assist with simple cleaning tasks around the lab space.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Good understanding of 3D modeling in at least two of the following programs:
- ​TinkerCAD, Fusion360, Maya, Rhinoceros (Rhino), Blender**
- Good understanding in Adobe Illustrator. Expertise in these other programs are welcome but not required:
- Photoshop, After Effects, Premier, In-Design
- A desire to communicate complex workflows and processes to new inquiring individuals.
- Ability to troubleshoot technological issues on Mac, & Windows computers

Minimum Qualifications

- Must be a currently enrolled MICA undergraduate or graduate student at time of employment

Compensation

- $15.00 per hour
- Time commitment: 10 hours per week
- Days of work will be determined by both the Student Technician and the Digital Fabrication Specialist

- Work environment: While performing the duties of the job, the employee will work in an environment with the possibility of multiple 3D printers and enclosed machines running. The noise level in the work environment can range from indoor level noise to noisy. All operating machines will not require the use of earplugs and are in safe hearing level range.
