West Valley - Sistema Homework Mentor

Job Summary: We are looking for a dynamic individual who is passionate about teaching to support our after-school program. Sistema Utah partners with American Preparatory Academy to provide free music and homework assistance classes to under-resourced students. Patterned after the El Sistema movement that originated in Venezuela, the program seeks to empower students through education, music, and academic support

Duties & Responsibilities:
The position includes but is not limited to the following list of representative duties:

- Mentor elementary students in grades 2-6 with homework and academic support in most subjects

- Provide assistance in an after-school classroom setting

- Support students during three daily instructional periods, each approximately 40 minutes in duration

- Provide guidance with effective study skills and techniques

- Participate in required training prior to beginning the position

- Maintain a safe, supportive, and positive learning environment

- Other duties as assigned

Schedule:

- Expected hours are up to 20 hours per week from August - May

- Typical part-time schedule is Monday, Tuesday, and Friday, 3:15 pm - 7:00 pm; Wednesday and Thursday, 2:15 pm - 6:00 pm (schedule may vary by approximately 15 minutes based on campus needs)

Pay:

- $14.00 - $17.00 per hour depending on experience

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

- Energetic, enthusiastic and committed to student success

- Ability to accept constructive criticism and make necessary adjustments

- Able to work well in a teamwork environment

- Proficiency in writing, mathematics, and Google applications including Docs, Sheets, and Forms

- Effective verbal and written communication skills

- Ability to demonstrate patience and work effectively with elementary students

- Ability to support students with a variety of academic needs

- Strong reliability and punctuality

- Effective study skills and ability to teach or reinforce study techniques

- Bilingual (Spanish) skills are preferred but not required

Education and Experience:

- High school diploma or equivalent required

- Experience working with elementary-aged students or providing academic support is preferred
