The Phlebotomist provides expert support in blood collection and specimen preparation, ensuring high-quality samples are obtained with minimal discomfort for patients across a wide range of ages and backgrounds. This role focuses on accurate specimen handling, clear communication with patients, and strict adherence to established procedures and safety regulations to support excellent patient care.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture and other blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, ensuring minimal discomfort and high-quality specimen collection.
- Collect, label, and store blood and other specimens (such as urine or fecal samples) according to established procedures and protocols.
- Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients before performing them.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify accuracy of orders prior to collection and processing.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders to maintain specimen integrity.
- Record maintenance data, perform decontamination tasks, and ensure equipment and work areas remain clean and compliant with safety standards.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts or orders to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport, following all protocols to maintain appropriate temperature and integrity during transit.
- Store specimen samples at required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling.
- Fully understand and interpret physicians orders to ensure correct tests and procedures are performed.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and adhere to all relevant safety and regulatory requirements.
- Wear appropriate attire, including required personal protective equipment, in accordance with safety and infection control guidelines.
- Attend annual department trainings to maintain current knowledge of procedures, safety regulations, and best practices.
- Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory results or information to satisfy inquiries, following appropriate procedures and confidentiality standards.
- Update patient information accurately and maintain detailed administrative and documentation records related to specimen collection and processing.
Essential Skills
- 23 years of experience performing blood draws, including venipuncture with straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Proficiency in phlebotomy techniques, including adult, pediatric, and infant blood draws.
- Hands-on experience with labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and storing specimens according to test requirements.
- Ability to clearly explain blood draw and specimen collection procedures to patients in a courteous and professional manner.
- Strong administrative skills and attention to detail, including accurate data entry and verification of laboratory requisitions and labels.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow physicians orders and laboratory protocols.
- Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and demonstrated ability to comply with safety and regulatory standards.
- Experience in specimen processing, including packaging specimens for transport and maintaining specimen integrity.
- Strong communication skills for answering telephone inquiries and relaying laboratory results appropriately.
- Bilingual communication skills.

Work Environment
This role is based in a clinical setting with a schedule of Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and every other Saturday or Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at a Newburgh location. The position involves in-state travel and offers a change of scenery for candidates who enjoy working in different locations. The work environment requires regular use of phlebotomy equipment such as straight needles, butterfly needles, and centrifuges, as well as computer systems for labeling, requisitions, and patient information. The role emphasizes compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations, adherence to safety and infection control protocols, and the use of appropriate clinical attire and personal protective equipment. No holiday or vacation work is required, contributing to a predictable and structured schedule.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Poughkeepsie, NY.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $23.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
