Engineering Manager - Pricing

This is a hybrid role, and we are currently considering candidates based in the Netherlands.
 
The Engineering Manager, Pricing leads a team of software engineers, applied ML engineers, and technical product managers responsible for the pricing engine and its supporting services across Protolabs. The capability and roadmap for pricing overall, the creation and ongoing management of LLM-driven capabilities that power pricing strategy and ensuring pricing is delivered as a true enterprise capability consistently supporting factory vs. network fulfillment, differentiated by service  line, and differentiated between prototype and production  rather than a collection of one-off pricing solutions.
This role sits at the center of a deliberately distributed pricing model: pricing analysts sit within a separate central pricing team to drive fast, locally informed decisions but ensure enterprise strategy at the same time. This role owns the shared engine, architecture, and strategy those decisions run on. Success means service lines get the speed and specificity they need without the company ending up with inconsistent, duplicated, or ungoverned pricing logic underneath them.

What You Will Do:

- Work with senior management and pricing leadership to set priorities for pricing engine and pricing services development, manage related projects, assign team members, and provide day-to-day technical directions

- Own the capability and roadmap for the pricing engine defining the multi-year strategy for how pricing rules, models, and services evolve as the business grows in complexity

- Guide problem analysis, solution design, development, and testing of pricing capabilities, ensuring the engine supports differentiated rules and models across factory vs. network fulfillment, by service line, and prototype vs. production

- Lead the creation and ongoing management of LLM-based capabilities that support pricing strategy, for example, using LLMs to help generate or recommend pricing rules, translate business pricing strategy into executable logic, or support pricing related decisioning — including their ongoing evaluation, retraining, and governance

- Ensure the pricing engine and its services are built and operated as a true enterprise capability, with consistent architecture and shared services, rather than siloed or duplicated implementations across service lines or fulfillment paths

- Recommend process improvements to raise pricing engine quality and reliability and to meet broader business objectives, including margin, conversion, and competitiveness

- Hire, manage, and develop a skilled staff spanning software engineering, applied ML/LLM development, and technical product management

- Provide ongoing management and development of team members, including mentoring on advances in pricing methodology, ML/LLM techniques, and software engineering practices

- Monitor pricing engine quality and continuous improvement efforts; recommend new methods or processes to improve pricing accuracy, competitiveness, and margin outcomes

- Partner closely with service-line-embedded pricing analysts and their leaders to ensure the central pricing capability serves their strategies while maintaining enterprise-wide consistency and governance

What You Bring:

- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field; an advanced degree is a plus

- 5+ years of experience leading and managing software engineering teams

- Strong software engineering background with demonstrated experience building and scaling complex, rules-based or model-driven decisioning systems, such as pricing engines, recommendation engines, or similar platforms

- Direct experience building and managing LLM-based or applied ML/AI capabilities in a production setting operationalized as real product capabilities, not just experimentation

- Experience with pricing strategy, revenue management, or similar quantitative business systems is a strong plus

- Proven ability to build and operate a capability as a true enterprise service designed for reuse and consistency across
multiple business lines or customer segments rather than one-off implementations

- Prior people-management experience leading engineering or applied ML teams, ideally at a senior or staff level with demonstrated capability-and-roadmap ownership, not only execution management

- Strong cross-functional partnership skills — this role works closely with distributed pricing analysts and service line leaders while maintaining a coherent enterprise pricing architecture underneath them
