This role involves performing high-quality blood collection using venipuncture and capillary techniques for patients across all age groups in an inpatient hospital environment. The phlebotomist supports pediatric, ICU, and high-volume units, processes specimens accurately, and helps ensure a safe, compliant, and patient-centered experience. The position also contributes to training and orienting patient service staff while adapting to variable shifts and locations within the region.
Responsibilities
- Perform blood collection by venipuncture and capillary techniques from patients of all age groups, including pediatric patients.
- Conduct pediatric blood collections safely and with sensitivity to the needs of children and their families.
- Handle difficult draws, including patients in medical office buildings and high-acuity inpatient settings such as ICU.
- Support inpatient phlebotomy operations, including high-volume collections and coordination with nursing and clinical teams.
- Process specimens accurately and efficiently, following established procedures for labeling, handling, and transport.
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of compliance and safety standards related to phlebotomy and specimen handling.
- Effectively communicate the importance of compliance and safety to other employees and promote adherence to policies and procedures.
- Provide orientation and training for patient service staff, sharing best practices for blood collection, patient care, and safety.
- Adapt to working across multiple locations within the region as scheduled, including Murrieta, Moreno Valley, Riverside, and other assigned sites.
- Respond to same-day call-ins for shift coverage, working closely with supervisors and schedulers to fill open shifts.
- Work across all three shifts (1st, 2nd, and 3rd) as needed, including split shifts, to support continuous inpatient coverage.
- Work weekends and holidays as scheduled, participating in a rotation when possible while remaining flexible for on-call needs.
- Maintain professional appearance in scrubs and represent the organization positively in all patient and staff interactions.
- Participate in training during the initial training period and apply learned procedures consistently in daily work.
- Meet minimum weekly hour expectations after training by accepting available shifts and on-call opportunities.
Essential Skills
- High school diploma (HS Diploma).
- Current CPT 1 License.
- At least 1 year of phlebotomy experience in a hospital setting, including exposure to pediatric, ICU, and high-volume environments.
- Inpatient phlebotomy experience is required.
- Demonstrated proficiency in blood collection by venipuncture and capillary techniques for patients of all ages.
- Experience performing pediatric blood collections.
- Ability to successfully perform difficult blood draws, including in medical office building settings.
- Comprehensive understanding of compliance and safety standards in phlebotomy and specimen processing.
- Ability to clearly communicate the importance of safety and compliance to other staff members.
- Ability and skills necessary to provide orientation and training for patient service staff.
- Willingness and ability to work 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shifts.
- Willingness and ability to work weekends and holidays as needed.
- Willingness to respond to same-day calls and work on short notice.
- Willingness to commute and work across multiple locations within the Riverside region.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Outpatient phlebotomy experience, especially 3+ years in a high-volume setting, is welcomed and may be rotated into inpatient assignments.
- Comfort working in a high-volume inpatient environment across multiple units.
- Flexibility to work per diem/on-call, including accepting shifts at various locations to increase hours.
- Ability to adapt to split shifts (for example, 4 hours at one location and 4 hours at another).
- Comfort working under a scheduling model where many shifts arise from same-day call outs.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills when interacting with patients, nurses, and other clinical staff.
- Ability to manage changing schedules and locations while maintaining high standards of patient care.
- Interest in ongoing development through resources such as care roadmaps and online learning platforms.
Work Environment
This is a hospital-based, inpatient-focused phlebotomy role with responsibilities that may also extend to medical office buildings and high-volume outpatient settings. There are multiple openings, and coverage spans all three shifts, including 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shifts. Schedules may include split shifts, such as working 4 hours at one location and 4 hours at another, and there is potential for shift cancellation with a minimum of 30 hours per week expected after the training period. The primary work locations include Murrieta, Moreno Valley, and Riverside, with the expectation that phlebotomists will commute to various sites throughout the Riverside region as needed. Many available shifts result from same-day call outs, so supervisors and schedulers will contact phlebotomists to offer shifts they can choose to accept. The role is per diem/on-call in nature, requiring flexibility with shift times, weekends, holidays, and on-call work, while efforts may be made to rotate weekends to support work-life balance. New hires train on 1st shift, Monday through Friday, at a single location for the first few weeks, with training typically lasting 23 months and scheduled at full-time hours. After training, phlebotomists can pick up shifts across multiple locations to increase their hours. The dress code requires scrubs, and the environment emphasizes safety, compliance, and professional conduct while offering access to benefits such as wellness resources and learning platforms.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Riverside, CA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $26.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
