Secretary/Technician, Full Time Days, 3 Shifts per week, 7a-7p, every other weekend Atlantic Health Newton Medical Center

Assists Patients with ADLs such as hygiene, mobility, toileting, and emotional support. Supports nursing personnel in providing direct patient care. Measures and records daily weights. Measures and records vital signs, I&Os. Knowledgeable on the normal values and ranges for vital signs and I&O’s, recognizes abnormal findings and reports to the primary nurse. Performs EKG’s, and blood glucose monitoring. Reports changes in patient condition.

Answers call lights promptly and courteously and provides interventions as appropriate. Ensures call bell and telephone are within reach of patient prior to leaving patient room. Cleans, stocks and sets up rooms for arriving patients. Checks for appropriate patient IDs including falls and allergy. Ensures patient rooms are neat and clean. Recognizes need for and responds to all bed and chair alarms in an expeditious manner. Works as Patient Safety Technician as needed. Rounds with purpose using appropriate scripting. Gives report to oncoming shift. Observes and responds to emotional needs of patient and/or significant other. Reports observations to RN for follow up. Seeks information regarding teaching goals for individual patients. Observes RN instructions to patients and provides consistent reinforcement as needed.

Answers phones promptly and politely while directing customers appropriately and efficiently. Uses proper phone etiquette and ADIET. Politely greets visitors, patients, and staff, answering their questions and directing them as needed

Prints patient labels and wristbands as appropriate. Organizes paper patient records to support timely HIM scanning. Provides document scanning as needed. Assists with admission packets and discharge/transfer paperwork and documentation and records transfer.

Demonstrates knowledge and competency with computer systems to perform timely and accurate unit/floor admissions, transfers and discharges. Removes all discharged patients from the system with in fifteen minutes or less. Maintains positive working relationships with ancillary/support departments to facilitate scheduling of diagnostic tests, procedures and services. Obtains patient supplies, results and medical records as appropriate. Makes follow up patient appointments as applicable. Conducts patient rounds.

Ensures competency with BCA procedures. Completes daily check of BCA computer/devices. Maintains BCA forms. Organizes and participates in BCA drills. Assists clinical staff with BCA education and implementation during a downtime. Assists with back entry of orders after a downtime.

Maintains Safe Environment: Adheres to OSHA, Joint Commission, Board of Health and hospital standards. Observes and maintains isolation precautions. Follows hand washing protocol. Maintains a clean and clutter free work environment. Uses and stores equipment properly. Wears and uses communication devices (Vocera) according to policy. Must work in a fast-paced environment with positive customer service skills.

Monitors unit/floor environment for cleanliness, safety and patient/staff comfort: Keeps work station organized and uncluttered. Reports and follows up on cleaning needs, leaks, temperature adjustments, safety concerns to appropriate departments (EVS, Plant Engineering, etc.)

Reports all lost or equipment unable to be repaired to charge nurse. Keeps equipment cleaned and charged. Notifies unit associate of equipment needing repair and attaches appropriate repair tag. Orients new staff in care of equipment.

Minimum Education:

- High School Diploma or GED required

License/Certifications:

- BLS preferred
- CNA preferred

Minimum Experience:

- Prior Unit Associate or Nursing Assistant experience in a hospital or medical setting preferred
