Intern Safety

BASIC FUNCTION:

Sonneborn, an HF Sinclair company, is seeking a motivated Safety Intern to join our Petrolia, Pennsylvania team. The Safety Intern supports the site’s Safety team by assisting with the organization, maintenance, and accuracy of safety documentation and digital resources. The position is designed for an early-career college student interested in learning how safety systems, document management, and communication workflows contribute to a strong and compliant safety culture.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Assist with the review, update, and organization of safety procedures, work instructions, SOPs, and other controlled documents to ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance.

- Support document control activities, including version management, periodic reviews, record retention, and maintenance of document indexes and databases.

- Assist in maintaining and updating safety information systems, including SharePoint sites, document libraries, forms, and related records.

- Support data management activities by conducting record audits, verifying data accuracy, and preparing reports, summaries, and presentation materials.

- Assist with industrial hygiene monitoring activities, including air sampling, noise monitoring, heat stress evaluations, confined space atmospheric testing, and other exposure assessments.

- Support personal protective equipment (PPE) assessments and related safety initiatives.

- Participate in workplace safety audits, inspections, observations, and corrective action follow-up activities.

- Assist with respiratory protection program activities, including respirator fit testing.

- Support safety communications, training materials, alerts, and employee awareness initiatives.

- Perform additional environmental, health, and safety (EHS) projects and administrative activities as assigned.

Special assignments or tasks assigned to the employee by their supervisor, as determined from time to time in their sole and complete discretion.

EDUCATION LEVEL:

- Currently pursuing an associate or bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health.

- Completion of junior level courses is preferred.

SKILLS:

- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow document templates and formatting standards.

- Solid written communication and proofreading abilities.

- Proficiency with Microsoft 365, especially Word, Excel, and SharePoint.

- Organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple documents and deadlines simultaneously.

- Professional communication and willingness to collaborate with Safety leadership and procedure owners.

- Familiarity with OSHA terminology or basic safety concepts.

- Experience with controlled document systems, SharePoint metadata, or file taxonomy.

- Exposure to incident tracking systems or learning management systems (LMS).

WORK CONDITIONS:

Petroleum refinery and driver-based environment including but not limited to chemical, pressure vessels, tanks, rotating equipment, working in confined spaces, and exposure to risk of electrical shock. Subject to all weather and varying road conditions. Occasionally required to work long hours, which may include nights, weekends, holidays for regularly scheduled maintenance and emergency work and support as well as on-call availability.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Job conditions require standing, walking, sitting, talking or hearing, making visual inspections, making precise hand and finger movements, lifting or carrying up to 50 lbs., climbing up to 200 ft, perceive color differences, required to wear personal protective equipment as needed and a respirator in emergency situations (beards are not permitted). Depending on location, you must satisfactorily complete a comprehensive medical physical examination. Job conditions may require twisting, stooping, crouching, kneeling, reaching or grasping, and working in confined spaces as permitted.
