Biorepository Technician

Job Description Summary

The Biorepository Technician is responsible for executing daily laboratory operational tasks related to material management, documentation, and data processing. This role ensures accurate material creation and confirmation, supports storage logistics, and maintains compliance with established SOPs and quality standards. The Technician works closely with the Senior Technician - Biorepository and internal teams to ensure timely and accurate handling of materials and associated documentation and completes the company's orientation program to build a working understanding of applicable US and OECD regulatory compliance, our Standard Operating Procedures, and chemical safety practices. This is an on-site role in our Leesburg VA facility.

How will you make an impact & Requirement

The Technician - Biorepository is responsible for the inventory, processing, and maintenance of research materials, which may include, but is not limited to: specimens, test articles, temperature-critical items, paper records, and/or various types of media. This role will perform a variety of biorepository functions, developing a sense of responsibility toward their duties to include the following:

Material Management

- Accession and archive of materials within the biorepository software / laboratory inventory management system.

- Ensures accuracy of material records, labeling, and documentation.

- Sorts and inventories research material , which may include, but is not limited to: wet tissues, blocks, slides, paper data, and/or temperature-sensitive material.

- Supports freezer clearance activities to maintain organized and compliant storage areas.

- Communicates storage status updates as needed to appropriate teams.

- Perform line clearance and end-of-day checks by clearing workstations and work areas between requests/batches to prevent cross-contamination, maintain material integrity, and ensure compliance.

- Assist with operational material processing activities , such as material transactions (including sales and system entries), materials indexing as applicable by department, aliquot and/or other laboratory procedures, freezer mapping, data digitization, and probe calibration support in accordance with client specifications.

Communication & Documentation

- Monitors temperature communications, including acknowledgment of alerts and required actions on Veriteq to ensure timely follow-up when needed, as applicable.

- Maintains accurate electronic records in accordance with SOPs.

Compliance & Housekeeping

- Performs routine SOP cleaning and ensures workspaces meet safety and quality standards.

- Adheres to all laboratory safety policies and regulatory requirements.

- Identifies discrepancies, irregularities, deviations, or process gaps and escalates appropriately to the Lead - Biorepository immediately, keeping them informed of day-to-day progress.

- Maintains working knowledge of applicable US and OECD regulations , our Standard Operating Procedures, Chemical Safety practices and equipment associated with the role, and Quality Control requirements, applying them consistently across all assigned duties.

Team Collaboration & Support

- Collaborates with the team to meet turnaround time (TAT) targets on client projects.

- Contributes to a positive, supportive team culture.

- Assists with cross-functional departmental work as needed.

Additional Responsibilities

- Performs other duties as assigned by the Biorepository Coordinator or appropriate supervisory personnel.

- Available for offsite projects / travel, including other biorepository and customer sites.

QUALIFICATIONS

- High school graduate (or equivalent); Associate's degree or equivalent experience in a scientific or related field preferred.

- Able to follow written and/or verbal instructions with high accuracy.

- Capable of producing quality work; strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

- Ability to learn and use Microsoft Office, database software, and the biorepository accessioning system; comfortable working with inventory and data management systems.

- General knowledge of rules of effective business English usage, spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

- Strong communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.

- Completion of the company's orientation program, including an understanding of how work must be completed in compliance with applicable US and OECD regulations and our Standard Operating Procedures, and an understanding of Chemical Safety and the proper use of safety equipment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

- Attention to detail when creating, confirming, labeling, and verifying materials, records, and data to ensure accuracy across all documentation

- Data accuracy and documentation control , including accurate electronic recordkeeping and accessioning within the biorepository software / laboratory inventory management system

- Inventory management skills to sort, track, and maintain organized, compliant storage of research materials, including wet tissues, blocks, slides, and temperature-sensitive materials

- Compliance awareness , including working knowledge of applicable US and OECD regulations, Standard Operating Procedures, chemical safety practices, and Quality Control requirements

- Organizational skills to manage multiple assigned projects and meet turnaround time (TAT) targets in a fast-paced laboratory environment

- Team collaboration skills to work effectively with assigned and cross-functional teams, contributing to a positive and supportive team culture

ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS

- Work is performed in a warehouse and biorepository environment, including refrigerated and freezer storage areas, with routine exposure to varying temperatures.

- Requires prolonged periods of standing, walking, and sitting, along with frequent bending, reaching, kneeling, and repetitive hand and wrist movements related to material handling and processing.

- Must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 25-50 pounds on a regular basis and safely utilize required personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with company safety and quality standards.

- Handles dry ice, gel packs, and liquid nitrogen, formalin as mediums for the transport of materials, following required safety protocols and personal protective equipment (PPE) guidelines.
