Job Title: Medical Assistant Dermatology and Mohs Surgery Job Description
This Medical Assistant role supports a busy dermatology practice with a strong focus on Mohs micrographic surgery and other surgical and medical dermatology visits. You will play an integral part in both clinical care and administrative support, working closely with providers to ensure safe, efficient procedures and an excellent patient experience. The position offers the opportunity to gain specialized experience in dermatology while utilizing multiple electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
Responsibilities
- Prepare exam and procedure rooms for Mohs micrographic surgery and other surgical and medical visits, ensuring proper setup of procedural instruments and smooth clinic flow.
- Assist the Mohs surgeon during all stages of the procedure, including preoperative care, tissue preparation, hemostasis, wound closure, and postoperative care.
- Perform patient intake by obtaining medical history, reviewing consent forms, taking surgical photographs, and addressing pre-procedure questions or concerns.
- Provide detailed wound care instructions and educate patients on post-procedure expectations and follow-up care.
- Process and handle tissue specimens for pathology evaluation in accordance with established protocols.
- Ensure accurate documentation of procedures, medications, MIPS data, and follow-up instructions in the electronic medical record (EMR) system.
- Schedule pre- and post-operative appointments and assist patients with inquiries related to their visits and procedures.
- Confirm patient insurance coverage and obtain prior authorizations when required.
- Complete patient charting and documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
- Manage pathology logs and act as a liaison between the physician and patient to communicate pathology results and document all communication according to protocol.
- Record required information in compliance logs, including pathology, biopsy, laboratory, and temperature logs.
- Adhere to OSHA, HIPAA, and infection control standards and complete mandatory compliance training.
- Cross-train in the Mohs laboratory to perform histotechnology-related components as permitted by state-specific CLIA requirements.
- Cross-train in general and cosmetic dermatology to support broader clinical operations as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support providers and ensure efficient clinic operations.
Essential Skills
- Experience in medical assisting, including direct patient care in a clinical setting.
- Strong understanding of medical terminology, particularly in dermatology and surgical procedures.
- Ability to work effectively in a dermatology environment, including support for Mohs micrographic surgery.
- Proficiency in using electronic medical record (EMR) systems, with experience in NextGen and EMA or similar platforms.
- Knowledge of healthcare documentation standards and accurate patient charting practices.
- Ability to process and handle tissue specimens following established protocols.
- Familiarity with OSHA, HIPAA, and infection control requirements and the ability to adhere to these regulations.
- 12 years of recent experience in a dermatology or surgical setting preferred.
- MA certification preferred.

- Comfort working in a specialty practice focused on dermatology and Mohs surgery.
- Strong patient communication skills, including the ability to explain procedures, wound care, and post-procedure expectations clearly and compassionately.
- Organizational skills to manage scheduling, insurance verification, prior authorizations, and pathology log documentation.
- Ability to serve as a liaison between physicians and patients when delivering pathology results and documenting communications.
- Willingness to cross-train in the Mohs laboratory for histotechnology components in line with state-specific CLIA requirements.
- Willingness to cross-train in general and cosmetic dermatology to support a variety of clinical services.
- Attention to detail and reliability in maintaining compliance logs and following clinic protocols.
- Adaptability to work with multiple EMR systems and learn new technologies and workflows.
Work Environment
This role is based in a specialty dermatology practice where you will work closely with providers in both clinical and procedural settings. You will support Mohs surgery, general dermatology, and cosmetic dermatology, gaining exposure to a wide range of dermatologic conditions and treatments. The practice utilizes multiple EMR systems, including NextGen and EMA, providing valuable experience with different healthcare technologies. Clinical hours typically include an approximately one-hour lunch break around midday, adjusted as needed based on clinic flow and patient scheduling. The dress code requires solid-color scrubs in any color, with certain colors reserved for other roles. You will work in a professional medical environment that emphasizes patient safety, regulatory compliance, and collaborative teamwork.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Portsmouth, NH.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $26.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
