What The Role Entails

Based in Ashburn, Virginia, the Telecom Infrastructure Network Engineer at CloudHQ develops and maintains the physical-layer engineering for fiber-optic connectivity across inside-plant and outside-plant environments. The role manages routes, mapping, construction drawings, technical coordination, and utility interfaces from concept through as-built record completion.

What You Will Get to Do

- Develop physical fiber route concepts and detailed designs for campus, metro, long-haul, building, and data center connectivity.
- Prepare and review route maps, construction drawings, conduit and pathway plans, handhole and manhole details, rack elevations, cable schedules, splice plans, and labeling schemes.
- Coordinate proposed routes with utilities, civil teams, property stakeholders, permitting authorities, carriers, and construction contractors.
- Perform site surveys and field validation to confirm constructability, pathway availability, access constraints, hazards, and existing conditions.
- Create engineering scopes, technical specifications, bills of material, design packages, and installation requirements.
- Review contractor submittals, requests for information, design changes, redlines, test plans, and as-built documentation.
- Maintain accurate GIS, CAD, fiber-management, and asset records, including cable segments, strands, splices, terminations, pathways, and capacity assignments.
- Support construction and commissioning by resolving field conflicts, evaluating proposed changes, and documenting approved deviations.
- Define and review acceptance testing requirements, including applicable optical loss, continuity, and reflectometry records.

Success Measures

- Design packages are accurate, buildable, coordinated, and issued on schedule.
- Field changes and engineering decisions are documented and reflected in final records.
- Fiber, pathway, splice, and termination records remain complete and traceable.
- Installed systems meet approved design and acceptance requirements.

Requirements

What you Bring to the Role

- 3+ years of technical infrastructure management experience
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, telecommunications, network engineering, civil engineering, or related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
- Demonstrated experience designing or engineering physical fiber-optic infrastructure.
- Ability to read and produce route plans, construction drawings, schematics, schedules, and as-built records.
- Knowledge of fiber cable, pathways, splice closures, panels, termination hardware, testing concepts, and outside-plant construction methods.
- Experience coordinating with utilities, civil construction teams, carriers, vendors, and field technicians.
- Strong analytical, documentation, and technical communication skills.

Our Ideal Candidate Will Also Possess

- Experience with GIS, AutoCAD or similar drafting tools, and fiber-management or network-inventory platforms.
- Experience integrating inside-plant and outside-plant records across multiple facilities, regions, or countries.
- Familiarity with data center pathways, meet-me rooms, carrier entrances, diverse routing, and critical-environment change controls.
