Job Overview

Responsible for the firmware development of Protection & Control product lines, including planning, designing, developing, testing, and maintaining embedded firmware solutions to deliver high-quality, reliable, and secure products.
This role involves close collaboration with product management, hardware, systems, and engineering teams to define requirements, develop firmware architectures, implement features, and validate embedded systems. The Embedded Firmware Engineer will participate throughout the product development lifecycle, from concept and design to integration, verification, release, and post-release support.

A Day In The Life

Design, develop, implement, and maintain embedded firmware for Protection & Control products throughout the product lifecycle.
• Develop firmware for microcontroller and processor-based systems using Embedded C
• Perform board bring-up, firmware integration, and hardware-software validation for new product platforms.
• Design and implement device drivers, middleware, communication stacks, and application-level firmware components.
• Develop and maintain communication interfaces and protocols such as I2C, SPI, UART, Ethernet, Modbus, DNP3, and IEC 61850 as applicable.
• Collaborate closely with hardware, systems, product management, and quality engineering teams to ensure successful product development and delivery.
• Participate in firmware architecture reviews, design discussions, and technical feasibility assessments.
• Debug and resolve complex firmware, hardware-software integration, and system-level issues using appropriate debugging and diagnostic tools.
• Perform root-cause analysis of field and manufacturing issues and implement corrective actions to improve product reliability and performance.
• Develop and execute unit tests, integration tests, and system validation activities to ensure firmware quality and compliance with product requirements.
• Optimize firmware for performance, memory utilization, power consumption, and system reliability.
• Ensure compliance with coding standards, software development processes, and industry best practices, including code reviews and static analysis.
• Maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including design specifications, test reports, user documentation, and release notes.
• Support manufacturing, customer support, and field service teams in troubleshooting firmware-related issues.
• Participate in firmware release management, version control, and configuration management activities.
• Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by enhancing development methodologies, tools, automation frameworks, and engineering best practices.
• Stay current with emerging embedded technologies, microcontrollers, development tools, and industry standards relevant to Protection & Control products.
• Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance when required.
• Take ownership of assigned projects and deliver high-quality firmware solutions within schedule and quality objectives.

What will help you thrive in this role?

• Bachelor's degree in Electronics & Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Embedded Systems, or a related field.
• Must have 3 to 5 years of industry experience in embedded firmware design, development, testing, debugging, and validation of embedded products.
• Strong hands-on experience in 8/16/32bit microcontroller-based firmware development, board bring-up, and troubleshooting.
• Excellent programming skills in Embedded C, knowledge of C++ is an added advantage.
• Good hands-on experience with embedded development environments and toolchains such as STM32CubeIDE, CodeWarrior, Keil MDK, IAR Embedded Workbench, MPLAB X, VS Code, Code Composer Studio, or equivalent tools.
• Hands-on experience with debugging and development tools such as JTAG, SWD, GDB, Oscilloscopes, Logic Analysers, Protocol Analysers, and other embedded debugging utilities.
• Experience with ARM Cortex-M/A architectures and ARM-based SoCs.
• Strong understanding of embedded communication protocols, including I2C, SPI, UART, CAN, RS-485, Ethernet, Modbus, and TCP/IP.
• Experience working with peripheral interfaces such as PWM, DMA, EEPROM/Flash Memory, ADC, DAC, Timers, RTC, and GPIO.
• Good understanding of RTOS concepts (FreeRTOS, ThreadX, Zephyr, or equivalent), including tasks, scheduling, synchronization, queues, and memory management.
• Ability to read and interpret hardware schematics, datasheets, and technical specifications, and apply them effectively during development, debugging, and hardware-software integration activities.
• Experience in firmware integration, system validation, and debugging throughout the complete product development lifecycle.
• Familiarity with version control systems such as Git and collaborative development workflows.
• Knowledge of software development best practices, including code reviews, static analysis, coding standards (MISRA-C preferred), and unit testing.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to perform root-cause analysis and troubleshoot complex firmware and system-level issues.
• Experience in optimizing firmware performance, memory utilization, power consumption, and system reliability.
• Exposure to Embedded Linux development, device drivers, and Linux-based debugging tools is an added advantage.
• Self-motivated, proactive, and capable of working independently while taking ownership of assigned tasks and deliverables.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across cross-functional teams.
