This role focuses on the mechanical design and specification of fixed equipment for LNG, cryogenic, and power projects within an EPC environment. The mechanical engineer designs and specifies pressure vessels, columns, vaporizers, and associated supports, ensuring compliance with ASME Section VIII, API standards, and LNG-specific codes. The position involves close collaboration with vendors and internal disciplines, participation in site and fabrication reviews, and support through commissioning to deliver safe, reliable, and efficient mechanical systems.
Responsibilities
- Design and specify fixed equipment including pressure vessels, columns, vaporizers, and their supports for LNG, cryogenic, and power projects.
- Prepare and review mechanical datasheets, vessel calculations, nozzle and nozzle load checks, and detailed fabrication drawings.
- Execute pressure and mechanical design in accordance with ASME Section VIII, API standards, and LNG-specific codes and standards.
- Interface with equipment vendors by issuing requests for quotation (RFQs), evaluating technical proposals, and reviewing vendor drawings and documentation.
- Ensure quality control of vendor deliverables and manage vendor queries throughout the design and fabrication process.
- Support piping and structural engineering teams with equipment layout, loadings, and installation requirements to ensure integrated design solutions.
- Participate in site reviews and field walks to validate equipment layouts, installation feasibility, and constructability.
- Conduct or support pre-fabrication inspections to verify compliance with design specifications, codes, and quality requirements.
- Provide commissioning support, including technical guidance on equipment start-up, troubleshooting, and performance verification.
- Apply knowledge of specialized heat exchangers used in LNG plants to support design, specification, and review activities.
- Use pressure vessel design tools and finite element analysis (FEA) fundamentals to validate and optimize mechanical designs.
- Collaborate effectively with cross-discipline teams, including process, piping, structural, and construction personnel, to resolve technical issues.
- Apply knowledge of fabrication shop practices, welding procedures, and non-destructive examination (NDE) to ensure robust and inspectable designs.
- Leverage prior experience with U.S. Gulf Coast fabrication and construction projects to anticipate regional fabrication and construction considerations.
- Maintain clear and concise communication with stakeholders, documenting design decisions, technical clarifications, and project interfaces.
Essential Skills
- Bachelors degree in mechanical engineering or an equivalent engineering discipline.
- Minimum of 10 years of mechanical design experience in LNG, cryogenic, or power projects within an EPC environment.
- Extensive experience in the design of pressure vessels, columns, vaporizers, and related fixed equipment.
- Proficiency with pressure vessel design tools and a solid understanding of finite element analysis (FEA) fundamentals.
- Knowledge of piping flexibility and support interactions as they relate to equipment design and nozzle loading.
- Familiarity with ASME Section VIII, API standards, and relevant international codes and standards applicable to pressure equipment and LNG facilities.
- Strong vendor management skills, including RFQ preparation, technical bid evaluation, and vendor document review.
- Demonstrated fabrication knowledge and practical construction familiarity for heavy mechanical equipment.
- Experience with specialized heat exchangers used in LNG plants.
- Knowledge of fabrication shop practices, welding procedures, and non-destructive examination methods.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills and the ability to coordinate effectively across disciplines.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in Texas preferred.
- Previous experience with U.S. Gulf Coast fabrication and construction projects.
- Background in LNG, cryogenic systems, and power projects.
- Experience with piping systems and equipment interfaces in complex process facilities.
- Familiarity with vaporizers, cryogenic equipment, and power-related mechanical systems.
- Exposure to EPC project environments, including design, procurement, fabrication, and construction support phases.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to compliance with applicable codes and standards.

Work Environment
This position is primarily office-based, working in an engineering environment that supports complex LNG, cryogenic, and power projects. You will use specialized pressure vessel design tools and engineering software to develop and review mechanical designs in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. Work may involve periodic visits to fabrication shops and construction sites, including facilities on the U.S. Gulf Coast, to perform site reviews, pre-fabrication inspections, and commissioning support. The work setting typically follows standard office hours, with professional business-casual attire expected in the office and appropriate safety gear required when visiting fabrication or construction sites.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Houston, TX.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $75.00 - $85.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
