Job Summary:
This position is responsible for underwriting a diverse and complex book of business, employing methods to meet projected profitability, GWP, and expense goals. The role involves managing and growing the overall portfolio within established underwriting disciplines and guidelines, as well as marketing and servicing existing and potential clients. The individual will support the regional/global head in setting strategic goals and budgets, and will lead and develop the technical underwriting team.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Underwriting & Portfolio Management
- Execute business plans for development, management and expansion of assigned portfolio
- Perform extensive account analysis including submission review, pricing analysis, and setting terms and conditions
- Prioritize and evaluate submissions to identify accounts with greatest profit opportunity
- Authorize quotes, binders, and invoices in accordance with company guidelines
- Ensure timely and correct issuance of bound policies
- Craft wordings and endorsements for legal authorization
- Monitor portfolio development against original projections on quarterly basis
Business Development & Relationship Management
- Attend client/broker meetings, industry conferences, and networking events
- Negotiate with brokers and clients for new and renewal business
- Expand existing portfolio by developing relationships with existing and prospective clients
- Maintain established broker/market relationships
Team Leadership & Management
- Supervise and develop underwriting team members including delegation of duties and special projects
- Provide direction to Underwriters and Underwriting Assistants
- Conduct performance and salary reviews
- Coordinate underwriting processes and provide leadership to team members
Strategic & Financial Planning
- Support regional/departmental VP in setting strategic goals and budgets
- Work with senior management on strategic and financial planning
- Monitor developments and cash-flow of bound contracts
- Review PML analysis on portfolio quarterly
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Liaise with actuarial support for premium benchmarking and pricing models
- Coordinate with Claims Department on claim activity and market concerns
- Work with Legal, Accounting, IT and other internal departments as needed
- Stay current with major market and industry developments
Qualifications:
- 4-year college degree (graduate-level preferred)
- Professional insurance qualification (ACII, CPCU or similar)
- Minimum 7+ years underwriting experience (12+ years preferred for senior specializations)
- At least 2 years supervisory/management experience
- Demonstrable experience underwriting complex international projects
- Successful track record in developing and maintaining accounts
- Ability to work under tight deadlines and manage conflicting priorities
- Excellent negotiation skills and commercial acumen
- Highly computer literate with advanced proficiency in underwriting systems
- Ability and willingness to work outside normal office hours as required
- Fluent in English (additional languages beneficial)
