About the Role A hands-on player-coach. You write production code daily — designing ports, building adapters, reviewing every PR — and you own the architecture, set engineering standards, break the roadmap into work for three developers, and represent the team technically to Roche stakeholders. This is not a purely managerial or purely architectural seat: roughly 60% hands-on engineering, 40% technical leadership.
Job Title: Technical Lead
Key Responsibilities: • 8+ years in software / data engineering, including 2+ years in a technical lead, staff, or architect capacity with direct responsibility for other engineers' output. • Expert Python for production systems: OOP and abstract base classes, type hints, packaging, dependency management; comfortable authoring a library others build on. • Proven software architecture experience with clean / hexagonal (ports & adapters) architecture, dependency injection, and interface-driven design — demonstrable on real systems, not just theory. • Snowflake — hands-on production experience (databases/schemas, roles/warehouses, cloning, access model). • AWS — hands-on production experience building and operating services on AWS. • CI/CD with GitLab (or equivalent) — designing pipelines that build, test, and deploy. • Infrastructure as Code with Terraform — authored and maintained real infrastructure. • Secure secret management — hands-on experience keeping credentials/secrets out of code, logs, and state and sourcing them from a secrets backend (e.g. HashiCorp Vault, AWS Secrets Manager / Parameter Store). • Concept-level mastery (can explain how they work and design for them, independent of any specific vendor tool) of: data governance, data warehousing, data transformation, and data ingestion/ETL. • Strong SQL (to design and validate backend/migration adapters — not for production data work). • Professional working English and the communication skills to lead a distributed team and brief non-engineering stakeholders. • Orchestrators beyond CI: Airflow / Dagster.
Minimum Qualifications: Experience: 8+ years in software/data engineering, including 2+ years in a tech lead, staff, or architect role managing others. Tech Stack: Expert Python, strong SQL, AWS, Snowflake, Terraform, GitLab CI/CD, Airflow/Dagster, and secure secret management. Architecture & Skills: Proven hexagonal/clean architecture experience, strong data domain mastery, and fluent English communication for leadership.
