About this role

The Carmeuse US Finance Tax Team is seeking a highly motivated, seasoned Senior Tax Accountant to join our Tax team. This role is responsible for supporting the company's transactional tax functions, including sales and use tax, excise tax, gross receipts tax, severance tax, annual report filings, business licenses and other indirect tax obligations, as well as some other non-indirect compliance such as IRS 1099 filings. The successful candidate will take the primary role of ensuring a large amount of tax return compliance is filed timely and accurately, in accordance with each state’s taxing authorities. They will also assist in supporting the Transactional Tax Manager as needed by replying to taxing authority notices and state sales and use tax audits. Candidates will also need to work independently with all aspects of internal cross functional teams, including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Procurement team members and Sales associates to determine and utilize accurate information for return compliance.

Key Responsibilities

- Compliance & Reporting
- Prepare, review, reconcile and file multiple states sales and use tax returns, compliance reports, severance tax, excise tax, gross receipts tax, and other indirect tax returns accurately and timely at various time intervals.
- Perform monthly tax reconciliations and resolve discrepancies.
- Review transactional data and ensure proper tax treatment across jurisdictions.
- Support tax accrual processes and assist with month-end/quarter-end and year-end close activities.
- Maintain tax calendars and ensure compliance with filing deadlines.

Audit Support

- Assist with state and local tax audits, inquiries, and notices.
- Gather and analyze documentation requested by taxing authorities.
- Assist with research and responding to audit findings and compliance issues.
- Assist with tracking audit status and support resolution efforts.

Tax Research & Analysis

- Research indirect tax laws and regulations impacting company operations.
- Analyze taxability of products, services, and business transactions.
- Assist in preparing and issuing multiple state tax exemption certificates.
- Assist in preparing documentation supporting tax positions and exemption determinations.
- Assist in monitoring legislative and regulatory developments affecting transactional taxes.

Business Partnership

- Collaborate with Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Procurement, Supply Chain, Finance, and Legal teams to address tax-related questions.
- Review contracts and business transactions to identify transactional tax implications.
- Assist with implementation and maintenance of tax automation systems and ERP tax configurations.
- Support acquisitions, integrations, and system enhancement projects from a transactional tax perspective.

Process Improvement

- Identify opportunities to improve compliance processes and internal controls.
- Develop and maintain tax procedures and documentation.
- Leverage technology and automation to enhance efficiency and reduce risk.
- Participate in special projects as assigned.

Required Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or related field.
- 4-7+ years of experience in transactional tax, indirect tax, sales and use tax, or state and local tax compliance.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and data analysis functions.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.

Preferred

- Strong understanding of state and local tax regulations and compliance requirements.
- Experience preparing and reviewing multi-state indirect tax returns.
- Experience in manufacturing, mining, industrial, or multi-state operations.
- Experience with Vertex, OneSource (Co-Counsel), or other tax automation software.
- Familiarity with SAP, Oracle, or other ERP systems.
- Knowledge of business licensing, exemption certificate management, and tax audits

- Annual Base Salary Range of $98,000 - $110,000, depending on experience
