Job Description

The Screw Machine Setup Operator / CNC Mill-Turn Lathe Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining CNC screw machines, mill-turn centers, and CNC lathes used in the manufacturing of precision components. This position ensures parts are produced safely, efficiently, and in accordance with engineering drawings, customer specifications, and quality requirements. The operator will perform machine setups, tool changes, in-process inspections, and basic program adjustments while supporting continuous improvement initiatives within the Machine Shop.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Set up and operate CNC screw machines, mill-turn centers, and CNC lathes to manufacture precision components.
- Interpret engineering drawings, work instructions, specifications, and process documentation.
- Install and adjust tooling, fixtures, collets, chucks, and machine accessories required for production.
- Verify machine setups through first article inspections and production qualification runs.
- Perform tool offsets, wear adjustments, and minor program edits as authorized.
- Monitor machine performance and troubleshoot tooling, dimensional, or process issues.
- Conduct in-process inspections using precision measuring equipment including:

Micrometers
- Calipers
- Bore gauges
- Height gauges
- Thread gauges
- Optical comparators (as applicable)

- Ensure dimensional accuracy and compliance with drawing requirements and tolerances.
- Document inspection results and production data as required.
- Maintain machine productivity while minimizing scrap and rework.
- Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, and Production personnel to resolve technical issues.
- Support lean manufacturing initiatives and continuous improvement activities.
- Perform routine machine maintenance and cleaning.
- Maintain a safe, organized, and clean work area consistent with 5S principles.
- Comply with all company safety, quality, and environmental requirements.
- Assist in training and mentoring machine operators as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

Required

- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum 3-5 years of CNC machining experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Minimum 2 years of setup experience on CNC screw machines, CNC lathes, or mill-turn equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and GD&T.
- Experience with precision measurement equipment.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.

Preferred

- Experience with Swiss-style screw machines.
- Experience with multi-axis CNC mill-turn equipment.
- Familiarity with Mastercam or other CNC programming software.
- Aerospace, defense, or high-precision manufacturing experience.
- Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma training.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Strong understanding of CNC machining principles.
- Knowledge of cutting tools, inserts, tool geometry, and machining parameters.
- Ability to identify and correct process variations.
- Understanding of feeds, speeds, surface finishes, and machining tolerances.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency with basic computer applications and production data systems.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Physical Demands

- Frequent standing and walking throughout shift.
- Frequent use of hands for machine setup and operation.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.
- Ability to bend, stoop, reach, and climb as needed.
- Visual acuity required for inspection and measurement of precision components.

Work Environment

- Manufacturing and machine shop environment.
- Exposure to machine noise, metalworking fluids, and moving equipment.
- Temperature variations consistent with a production environment.
