About the Role

The ACLU seeks a Summer Legal Intern in the Speech, Privacy and Technology Project of the ACLU’s National office in New York, NY. This position can be remote or hybrid.

Qualifying applicants must currently be matriculated legal students and must be based in the U.S. for the entire duration of the internship.

The Team:

The Speech, Privacy and Technology Project is dedicated to protecting and expanding the First Amendment freedoms of expression, association, and inquiry; expanding the right to privacy and increasing the control that individuals have over their personal information; and ensuring that civil liberties are enhanced rather than compromised by new advances in science and technology. The project is currently litigating cases and conducting other advocacy efforts on a variety of issues, including political protest, freedom of expression online, privacy of electronic information, journalists’ rights, scientific and academic freedom, openness in the courts, privacy rights at the border, and the impact of big data and algorithmic decision-making.

What You’ll Do:

T he legal intern will be responsible for working alongside the team and assisting in all aspects of litigation .

Your Day to Day:

- Conduct legal research and analysis to support new and active litigation projects

- Aid in drafting of legal memoranda, pleadings, affidavits, motions, and briefs

- Draft and edit public education and non-litigation advocacy materials

- Provide support and assistance to ACLU affiliates and cooperating attorneys

What You'll Bring:

The internship is open to students who are in law school who have completed their first yea r of school before the internship commences, or are in an LLM program. Interns should possess the following:

- Excellent research skills, including conducting internet and legal database research

- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and writing

- Attention to detail, excellent organizing and time-management skills

- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

- The initiative to see projects through to completion

- Demonstrated commitment to public interest law, civil liberties, and racial justice

- Demonstrated ability to conduct complex legal analysis and fact finding

- Demonstrated interest in free speech, privacy, and technology preferred

Internship Logistics

- Location : Our internship program offers a limited number of remote or hybrid intern positions. This internship may be remote or hybrid and based in our New York City office.

- Time Commitment : Summer internships require a full time (35 hour/week) commitment for 10 consecutive weeks.

- Internship Duration : Internships have a start date of May 24 or June 7.

- Stipend : A stipend is available for those students who are lawfully authorized to work. Students who receive outside funding are eligible for a partial stipend to bring their total funding up to the level of the ACLU’s stipend amount for the summer. Legal interns receive a stipend amount of $24/hour (stipends are taxed).

Priority Application Deadline: October 18
