Safety Officer- Fixed Term Contract

Job Purpose

The purpose of this role is to promote, implement, and monitor health and safety standards across the mining operation to ensure compliance with legal, company, and industry requirements. The Safety Officer is responsible for identifying hazards, reducing risks, investigating incidents, conducting inspections, and fostering a strong safety culture to prevent injuries, occupational illnesses, and environmental incidents.

Key Responsibilities

- Ensure compliance with occupational health, safety, environmental, and mining regulations, company policies, and safe work procedures.
- Conduct workplace inspections, safety audits, and monitor the effective use of PPE and risk control measures.
- Identify workplace hazards, perform risk assessments and Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), and implement corrective actions.
- Investigate incidents, accidents, and near misses, determine root causes, and monitor the implementation of preventive measures.
- Conduct safety inductions, toolbox talks, and awareness programmes to promote a strong safety culture.
- Support emergency preparedness activities, including emergency response planning, drills, and maintenance of emergency equipment.
- Maintain safety records, reports, statistics, and regulatory documentation, and prepare safety performance reports.
- Monitor contractor compliance with safety standards and verify competency and certification requirements.
- Support occupational health, hygiene, environmental, and employee wellness initiatives through monitoring and awareness programmes.

Minimum Qualifications

- Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Mining Safety, or related field.
- Safety Management certification.
- Incident Investigation training.
- Risk Assessment qualification.
- First Aid certification (advantageous).
- Mine Health and Safety certification (advantageous).

Requirements

- Minimum 2 years' experience in a mining, quarrying, or heavy industrial environment, with exposure to open-pit or underground mining operations being advantageous.
- Proven experience in incident investigations, safety audits, risk assessments, and hazard identification.
- Sound knowledge of mining operations, equipment, hazards, and applicable safety regulations.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, root cause analysis, report writing, and documentation skills.
- Excellent communication, presentation, training, and interpersonal abilities.
- High attention to detail, strong observation skills, and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

Working Conditions

- Based at a mining site with regular exposure to operational areas.
- Ability to work shifts and extended hours when required.
- Regular interaction with mining equipment, contractors, and operational personnel.
- Must be medically fit to work in a mining environment.
