About this role
ABOUT DI
At Dimensional Innovations (DI), were Designers, Makers, Engineers, Developers, Strategists and Innovators working together to create remarkable experiences, places and products.
Our work lives at the intersection of design, technology and fabrication. From immersive brand experiences and interactive technology to sports venues, museums, corporate environments and destinations, we bring big ideas to life—all under one roof at our Kansas City headquarters.
ABOUT OUR SUMMER INTERNSHIP
At DI, an internship isn't about sitting on the sidelines.
Our summer interns become part of the team and have the opportunity to contribute to real client projects alongside professionals in their field. You'll see how ideas move from concept to design, development, fabrication and installation—and how different disciplines come together to create something remarkable.
Throughout the summer, you'll build practical skills, learn from experienced mentors, make connections across DI and leave with meaningful experience you can take back to school and into your career.
You'll work hard, learn a lot and have some fun along the way.
UI/UX DESIGN INTERN SUMMARY
At DI, digital experiences don't always live on a laptop or phone. They can become part of a museum exhibit, sports venue, healthcare environment, entertainment destination or immersive branded space.
As a UI/UX Design Intern, you'll join DI's Creative Studio while working closely with our Creative Technology, software development and engineering teams to help design intuitive, engaging digital experiences for real client projects.
You'll explore the entire user-centered design process—from research and early concepts to journey mapping, visual storytelling, detailed interface design and interactive prototypes in Figma.
Most importantly, you'll learn to think beyond what a screen looks like and consider how a person will actually experience it within the larger physical environment.
What You May Work On
- Contribute UI/UX design thinking to real DI client projects
- Help develop user experiences for interactive installations and digital experiences
- Create user flows, journey maps, wireframes and interactive prototypes using Figma
- Explore concepts through research, sketching, visual storytelling and rapid iteration
- Develop detailed user interface designs that balance usability, visual design and the overall experience
- Help communicate concepts through compelling visual storytelling and project presentations
- Participate in user-centered design activities and discussions
- Gather inspiration and build visual vocabularies to help guide creative direction
- Conduct market, audience and design research to inform project decisions
- Contribute to conceptual design, design detailing and branding as appropriate
- Collaborate closely with designers, software developers, Creative Technology and engineering teams
- Participate in critiques, project meetings and design reviews
- Stay curious about emerging trends, technology, culture and how people interact with digital experiences
WHAT YOULL LEARN
By the end of the summer, you'll have greater exposure to:
- Designing digital experiences for real users and real environments
- Applying user-centered design methods to professional client work
- Moving from research and early concepts into detailed interface designs
- Building user flows, journey maps, wireframes and prototypes
- Using Figma as part of a professional collaborative design workflow
- Designing interfaces with usability, accessibility and visual communication in mind
- Communicating ideas through visual storytelling and presentations
- Receiving, interpreting and applying feedback from designers, developers and project teams
- Understanding how UI/UX designers collaborate with software developers and engineers

- Understanding how an interactive experience moves from concept through design, development, testing and installation
- Balancing creative ideas with user needs, technical requirements and project goals
WHO WERE LOOKING FOR
You don't need to have designed a dozen professional apps—that's why you're here. We're looking for students who are curious about people, passionate about design and interested in creating digital experiences that are both beautiful and intuitive.
You'll be most successful if you bring:
- A strong interest in UI/UX, interaction design and user-centered design
- Experience using Figma for interface design, wireframing or prototyping
- Strong visual design and visual storytelling skills
- Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, including Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop
- An interest in user research, journey mapping and understanding how people interact with technology

- The ability to adapt and "go where needed" in a fast-moving creative environment
- Comfort experimenting, receiving feedback, iterating and trying again
- Strong communication, organization and attention to detail
- Experience with motion, 3D design or tools such as After Effects or SketchUp is a plus
Students pursuing UI/UX Design, Interaction Design, Graphic Design, Industrial Design or a related field are encouraged to apply.
WHY YOULL LOVE DI
Real work. You'll contribute to actual client projects—not just hypothetical intern assignments.
Design beyond the screen. At DI, digital experiences often become part of physical spaces. You'll get to think about how someone interacts with technology while standing in a museum, walking through a sports venue or exploring an immersive environment.
See design become an experience. You'll have exposure to the process from early UX thinking and interface design through development, testing and ultimately something people can actually interact with.
Work directly with developers. You'll collaborate closely with Creative Technology and software development teams, giving you firsthand experience designing alongside the people responsible for bringing your interfaces to life.
Design for all kinds of users. DI's projects span sports, museums, healthcare, entertainment and other markets, exposing you to different audiences, environments and design challenges.
One roof, a lot of perspectives. Designers, developers, engineers, project managers and fabricators work together at DI, giving you exposure to disciplines you may not experience in the classroom.
Built-in mentorship. You'll work alongside experienced creative and technical professionals who can provide feedback, challenge your thinking and help you continue developing your skills.
Employee-owned. DI is an ESOP company, which means our employees share in the success of the company and bring an owner's mindset to the work we do.
A summer that's more than work. You'll also have opportunities to connect with fellow interns and DI employees through intern events, activities and experiences throughout the summer.
