ABOUT OUR SUMMER INTERNSHIP

At DI, an internship isn't about sitting on the sidelines.

Our summer interns become part of the team and have the opportunity to contribute to real client projects alongside professionals in their field. You'll see how ideas move from concept to design, development, fabrication and installation—and how different disciplines come together to create something remarkable.

Throughout the summer, you'll build practical skills, learn from experienced mentors, make connections across DI and leave with meaningful experience you can take back to school and into your career.

You'll work hard, learn a lot and have some fun along the way.

FABRICATOR INTERN SUMMARY

As a Fabricator Intern , you won't just get to see DI's projects come to life—you'll help build them.

You'll work hands-on alongside DI's experienced fabrication team to construct real client projects using a wide variety of materials, tools and techniques. Our work is highly custom, which means you could be building something for a professional sports venue, museum, corporate environment or entertainment destination—and the next project may be completely different.

You'll learn what it takes to turn drawings, designs and raw materials into finished experiences while gaining practical experience in a professional fabrication environment.

If you like working with your hands, figuring out how things go together and seeing something tangible at the end of the day, this is an internship where you'll get to do exactly that.

What You May Work On

- Help fabricate and assemble components for real DI client projects

- Work with a variety of materials that may include wood, plastics, metals, laminates and other specialty materials

- Use hand tools, power tools, measuring equipment and other fabrication tools

- Read and interpret drawings, blueprints and project documentation

- Measure, cut, assemble and finish components with an emphasis on quality and accuracy

- Learn fabrication techniques from experienced craftspeople

- Collaborate with other fabricators and production teams to solve challenges as projects are built

- Help inspect work for quality, fit and finish

- Maintain a clean, organized and safe work environment

- See projects progress from individual components to completed experiences ready to leave our shop and head to the client

WHAT YOULL LEARN

By the end of the summer, you'll have greater exposure to:

- Building custom, one-of-a-kind projects in a professional fabrication environment

- Safely and effectively using a variety of fabrication tools and equipment

- Working with different materials and understanding how each behaves

- Reading and interpreting drawings, blueprints and measurements

- Applying fractions, decimals, basic geometry and both standard and metric measurements to real projects

- Understanding fit, finish, quality and craftsmanship expectations

- Problem-solving when you're building something that doesn't come with a set of instructions

- Working efficiently as part of a production and fabrication team

- Understanding how design and engineering decisions translate into the way something is actually built

- Seeing how projects move from drawings and raw materials to finished client experiences

WHO WERE LOOKING FOR

You don't need to be an expert fabricator yet—that's why you're here. We're looking for students who like to make things, aren't afraid to get their hands dirty and want to learn from people who build remarkable things every day.

You'll be most successful if you bring:

- An interest in fabrication, woodworking, manufacturing, construction or building things by hand

- Experience with finish carpentry, cabinet making, custom woodworking, finishing or plastics is a plus

- Familiarity with hand and power tools

- Basic knowledge of fractions, decimals and geometry

- Familiarity with both standard and metric measurements

- Experience reading or interpreting blueprints and drawings is a plus

- Comfort using measuring tools and working accurately

- A strong eye for quality and attention to detail

- A positive attitude, strong work ethic and willingness to jump in where needed

- An interest in creative problem-solving and custom manufacturing

- A commitment to working safely in an active fabrication environment

Students pursuing Construction, Carpentry, Cabinetmaking, Industrial Technology, Manufacturing, Sculpture or a related program are encouraged to apply.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

The Fabricator Internship is a full-time, hourly (non-exempt) summer internship based onsite at Dimensional Innovations' Kansas City-area headquarters in Overland Park, Kansas.

Summer 2027 Internship Dates: June 7th - August 6th
Application Deadline: December 31st - but the earlier the better, these internships fill quickly
Schedule: Monday–Friday, approximately 40 hours per week
Location: Overland Park, Kansas
Work Arrangement: Onsite

We'd love to see examples of things you've built, made, repaired or created.

Don't worry if you don't have a traditional portfolio. School projects, shop projects, woodworking, furniture, construction projects, personal builds and other hands-on work are all great ways to show us what you can do.
