About this role

Standard Job Description

What We're Doing

At Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems (RMS) in Owego, NY, we're developing mission-critical embedded software and advanced computing solutions for complex defense and aerospace systems. Our software supports safety-critical avionics, mission computers, embedded processing, and secure systems where reliability and performance matter.

The Work

As a Level 3 Senior Software Engineer, you'll work across the software development lifecycle, taking ownership of complex technical assignments and developing solutions that move from design into real mission systems. You'll collaborate with software, systems, hardware, cyber, and test engineers in a hands-on environment.

Responsibilities include:

* Design, develop, test, debug, document, and integrate embedded software for avionics, mission computers, and secure processing systems.
* Develop software for RTOS and hypervisors such as LynxOS, VxWorks, Green Hills Integrity, or LynxSecure.
* Perform hands-on software/hardware integration, verification, troubleshooting, and system-level debugging using target hardware and laboratory instrumentation.
* Analyze and resolve complex issues involving processors, FPGAs, peripherals, and hardware/software interfaces.
* Apply software engineering standards, development processes, configuration management, and coding best practices.
* Support modern DevSecOps practices, including CI/CD and automated testing.
* Participate in peer reviews and technical design discussions.
* Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers.

Who We Are

RMS Owego brings together software, systems, hardware, and integration expertise to develop advanced mission solutions. Our engineers work with real mission hardware in onsite laboratories, taking software from architecture and design through integration and test.

Who You Are

You're a software engineer who enjoys solving complex problems and working across engineering disciplines. You can independently tackle significant technical challenges, communicate effectively, and apply sound engineering judgment. Experience with embedded software, C/C++, RTOS, hypervisors, hardware/software integration, or safety-critical systems is highly valued.

Why Join Us

At Lockheed Martin, you'll work alongside experienced engineers on technology with real-world mission impact while continuing to grow your technical expertise. We offer flexible schedules, including 4x10 and Flex Time, comprehensive benefits, career development and mentorship, and hands-on opportunities from early development through laboratory integration and testing.

Basic Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree or above from an accredited college in a STEM discipline (Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or related technical field); with 5 years of related professional experience or 3+ years related experience required with a related Masters degree
* Professional embedded software development experience in C and/or C++.
* Familiar with developing and debugging software that controls embedded hardware, firmware, and FPGAs. Knowledge of hardware communication protocols such as PCIe, SPI, UART, and I2C
* Experience developing, integrating, and debugging software within a Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) or embedded Linux environment (e.g., Wind River VxWorks, LynxOS, Green Hills Integrity, or similar).
* Experience working with hardware/software interfaces (microcontrollers, microprocessors, FPGAs, or custom hardware).
* Willingness and ability to work onsite in Owego, NY, including working within closed/classified lab facilities.
* Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance at the Secret level.
* Must be a US Citizen; this position will require a DoD government security clearance at the Secret level. This position is located at a facility that requires special access

Desired Skills

* Experience with Secure Processing concepts, cryptography, secure boot, or hypervisor technologies (e.g., LynxSecure).
* Experience developing low-level software, device drivers, and Board Support Packages (BSPs).
* Familiarity with open architecture initiatives and modular design standards (e.g., FACE, OMS, SOSA).
* Knowledge of hardware communication protocols (e.g., PCIe, Ethernet, SPI, UART, I2C, ARINC-429).
* Hands-on experience working in lab environments with test instrumentation (logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, serial consoles).
* Experience using Agile software development tools and methodologies (e.g., Git, Jira, Confluence, CI/CD).
* Experience with Test-Driven Development (TDD), unit testing frameworks (e.g., VectorCAST), and automated regression test benches.
* Familiarity with safety-critical software development processes (e.g., DO-178C).
