Staff Accountant

Job Description The Staff Accountant prepares, reviews, and approves day-to-day and monthly journal entries, transaction processing, recording, and reporting, while overseeing general ledger reconciliations in the accounting system and related modules. This role collaborates closely with finance leadership to assess and implement business process improvements that increase efficiency and strengthen internal controls. The Staff Accountant also supports the monthly close, contributes to audit preparation, and provides training and guidance to finance and regional staff. Responsibilities

- Independently ensure the timely and accurate recording of all regional financial activity in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
- Complete and review all required reconciliations in line with generally accepted accounting principles, including balance sheet and other key accounts.
- Prepare monthly account reconciliations and analyses, including bank accounts, petty cash, subsidiary ledgers, general ledger accounts, fixed assets, prepaid expenses, and specific expense accounts, and work with staff to resolve outstanding items.
- Reconcile subledger modules to the general ledger as part of the month-end close process.
- Prepare journal entries with appropriate accounting classifications in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles.
- Analyze financial data and prepare reports used in financial statements and audit schedules in collaboration with other finance team members.
- Assist with the preparation and coordination of audit-requested schedules and samples, ensuring appropriate documentation of policies and procedures.
- Support the monthly close process in coordination with senior finance staff, helping to ensure an accurate and timely close.
- Support ongoing improvements to policies, procedures, internal controls, and tools to drive greater operating efficiency and enhance customer service to internal stakeholders.
- Support effective communication and planning processes with other departments and finance staff across the organization.
- Assist with the facilitation of the annual budget process and review employee expense reports as needed.
- Provide or support accounting and financial management training for headquarters and regional office staff.
- Effectively complete other accounting and finance duties as assigned.

Essential Skills

- 34 years of experience in accounting with a strong focus on reconciliations, debits and credits, and month-end processes.
- 4+ years of experience focused on accounting and balance sheet reconciliations, financial statement analysis, budgeting, and client support.
- Hands-on experience with general ledger accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and bank reconciliations.
- Experience in key finance and accounting functions, including payments and accounts payable processing, revenue recognition, general ledger maintenance, cash management, budgeting, financial analysis, and support for strategic business decisions.
- Bachelors degree in Accounting or a related field.
- Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and their application to journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including VLOOKUP and pivot tables, and strong skills in other MS Office applications such as Word and PowerPoint.
- Ability to assess and independently resolve a wide range of accounting and financial issues in creative and practical ways.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain financial information clearly to non-finance stakeholders.
- Strong interpersonal abilities and supervisory skills, with the capacity to train and support staff.
- Demonstrated ability to work accurately and efficiently in a deadline-driven environment, particularly during month-end close and audit cycles.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

- Experience in nonprofit accounting environments.
- Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 (D365) Finance and Operations.
- Experience with Concur or similar expense management systems.
- Exposure to or experience with audit processes and preparation of audit schedules.
- Masters degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is preferred.
- Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license is considered an asset.
- Strong training and content facilitation skills for supporting financial management training.
- High level of attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining strong internal controls.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and regional offices.
- Comfort with continuous improvement initiatives and process optimization.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Washington, DC.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $28.85 - $32.69/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job
classification and length of employment. Benefits are subject to change and may be
