Job Title: Systems Administrator Job Description
This Systems Administrator role provides hands-on, on-site IT support across office, engineering, and production environments in a dynamic manufacturing setting. You will serve as the primary point of contact for day-to-day technology needs while administering network infrastructure, managing endpoints, and supporting user access in Microsoft 365 and Windows-based environments. This position offers the opportunity to work closely with customers, participate in meetings, and follow products through the full manufacturing lifecycle, while contributing to a secure and compliant IT environment aligned with NIST 800-171 requirements.
Responsibilities
- Provide on-site technical support for users across office, engineering, and production environments.
- Troubleshoot hardware, software, printing, network connectivity, and general workstation issues.
- Support and administer network infrastructure, including FortiGate firewalls, Cisco switches, and 802.1X/NAC environments.
- Perform routine network configuration changes and troubleshoot connectivity issues.
- Install, configure, patch, and update operating systems and business applications across workstations, laptops, and servers.
- Review patching activity, system health, and vulnerability information to help maintain a secure IT environment.
- Provision and configure computers and other IT equipment for new and existing users.
- Assist with endpoint management, including imaging, patching, endpoint protection, backups, and asset tracking.
- Administer user accounts, permissions, and access within Microsoft 365 and Active Directory environments.
- Manage the IT portions of employee onboarding and offboarding, ensuring appropriate access and equipment allocation.
- Provide support for VMware ESXi, virtual servers, storage, and backup environments.
- Maintain accurate documentation related to systems, equipment, configurations, and ongoing IT work.
- Manage and prioritize incoming IT requests, ensuring issues are addressed in a timely and professional manner.
- Support organizational cybersecurity and compliance practices, including adherence to NIST 800-171 requirements.
- Coordinate with outside IT partners and vendors when additional technical support or escalation is required.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders and customers, attending meetings as needed to support technology initiatives and projects.
- Adapt to a variety of IT priorities and responsibilities, effectively wearing many hats in a small to mid-size manufacturing organization.
Essential Skills
- 3 to 5 years of hands-on IT support or systems administration experience.
- Proven hands-on experience with firewalls and network switches.
- Practical experience administering FortiGate firewalls.
- Practical experience working with Cisco switches.
- Strong networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, and Wi-Fi troubleshooting.
- Experience with Microsoft 365 administration, including user accounts and permissions.
- Experience with Active Directory for user and access management.
- Experience supporting Windows-based environments for workstations, laptops, and servers.
- Experience with VMware ESXi and virtual server environments.
- Familiarity with endpoint management, including imaging, patching, endpoint protection, backups, and asset tracking.
- Understanding of cybersecurity principles and experience supporting compliance frameworks such as NIST 800-171.
- Ability to troubleshoot hardware, software, and network issues across diverse environments.
- Strong organizational skills to manage and prioritize multiple IT requests and tasks.
- Clear, professional communication skills for supporting users and coordinating with vendors.
- CompTIA A+ or equivalent foundational IT knowledge (explicit certification experience noted).
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working with remote monitoring and management (RMM) tools.
- Experience with 802.1X and network access control (NAC) environments.
- Exposure to manufacturing, aerospace, or defense industry environments.
- Ability to collaborate closely with customers and internal teams, including attending meetings and supporting project-related IT needs.
- Comfort wearing many hats and working in a small to mid-size organization with broad IT responsibilities.
- Strong documentation skills for systems, configurations, and IT processes.
- Interest in contributing to a stable organization with very low attrition and long-term employee tenure.
- Motivation to support an organization with a positive growth forecast and opportunities to see products through the full manufacturing lifecycle.
Work Environment
This role is based in a manufacturing setting within a small to mid-size company in the aerospace and defense industry. You will work on-site and support users across office, engineering, and production areas, interacting with a wide range of technologies including FortiGate firewalls, Cisco switches, Microsoft 365, Windows systems, VMware ESXi, and endpoint management tools. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The dress code is business casual. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Patterson, NY.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $31.25 - $38.46/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
