Senior Health, Safety & Environmental Specialist

## Position Summary

The Senior Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Specialist directly reports to the Plant Manager through supporting day-to-day site operations and receives strategic direction through a dotted line relationship with the Business Unit HSE Leader. This role oversees the site's HSE management system, ensuring HSE programs and objectives are effectively integrated into daily operations with clear operational ownership and accountability. The Senior HSE Specialist provides HSE leadership, technical expertise, coaching, and oversight while enabling operations leaders to own and execute HSE programs within their areas of responsibility.

As a trusted advisor with the local leadership team, the Senior HSE Specialist supports risk reduction, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement through coaching, training, auditing, and performance monitoring. This role leads the development and improvement of HSE procedures and management systems to align with STERIS, regulatory, and applicable ISO requirements, while reinforcing that HSE performance is owned by operations and enabled through HSE expertise across the site and V. ## General Functions, Specific Responsibilities, and Authority:

HSE Program Management and Oversight

- Partner with site leadership and operations teams to drive and maintain an inclusive, engaging, and proactive safety culture.
- Responsible for ensuring site conformance to all HSE programs, requirements and initiatives. Advise site operations on HSE requirements and compliance with Steris HSE standards and applicable regulatory requirements for which they are accountable.
- Lead and oversee the risk assessment program by training and coaching operations teams to assess risks and maintain ownership of controls.
- Facilitate protective and preventative measures, incident and near-miss investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action tracking while developing operations' capability to lead investigations and prevention efforts.
- Monitor, analyze, and communicate HSE performance metrics, trends, and corrective actions to site leadership.

Enablement of Sustained HSE Performance

- Maintain the site HSE training matrix, monitor training compliance, and develop and deliver training materials that enable operational ownership of HSE programs.
- Manage and track corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs) and other improvement actions to timely closure.
- Support the implementation and continuous improvement of proactive safety observation programs, associate and leadership engagement initiatives, leading indicators, and HSE performance objectives.
- Coordinate emergency preparedness programs, including response planning, training, and drills, in partnership with site leadership.
- Serve as a subject matter resource for the Navigator Global Operating System and elevate significant HSE concerns to management.
- Prepare HSE reports, dashboards, and meeting materials, and advise leadership on KPI performance, objectives, and improvement opportunities.
- Partner with key stakeholders to ensure HSE change management requirements are effectively integrated and executed during capital projects and significant operational changes.
- Align programs and prepare site for ISO14001, ISO45001, and OSHA VPP readiness

Technical and Compliance Support

- Manage chemical safety and environmental compliance programs, including SDS administration and chemical approval processes.
- Coordinate occupational health programs, including industrial hygiene monitoring, medical surveillance, and ergonomics assessments.
- Oversee environmental and sustainability programs, including stormwater, wastewater, waste management, energy reduction, and carbon reduction initiatives.
- Support HSE certifications, training, and occupational health programs, including new hire orientation, CPR/AED, First Aid, Hazard Communication, and health surveillance initiatives.
- Assist Human Resources with workers' compensation case management, incident documentation, and return-to-work coordination.

HSE Enterprise Collaboration

- Support HSE initiatives and consult across V. Mueller facilities as requested.
- Collaborate with Steris HSE professionals on network initiatives, projects, and best-practice sharing.
- Input and participation in post-incident reviews and lesson sharing
- Support and involvement in Corporate HSE Audit Program

## Required Experience

Knowledge, Experience, Skills and Education

- Bachelor’s degree with 5 years of relevant experience, or associate’s degree with 9 years’ experience working in the health, safety, and environment field.
- In lieu of a degree, a High School diploma or GED with 13 years’ experience working in the health, safety, and environmental field.
- HSE IT solution experience, which includes implementing or maintaining new technologies.
- Understanding and practical experience in supporting and implementing HSE programs in conformance with OSHA, ANSI, ISO 14001 and 45001 standards.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Ability to travel domestically up to 5-10% of the time.
- Occasional schedule flexibility to support HSE needs of other shifts.
- Available to support site needs during off hours during incidents or emergency situations.

Preferred Knowledge, Experience, Skills, and Education

- Certified Safety Professional Certification  (CSP) or Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
- Master's degree in occupational health, Safety Management, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Public Health, or a related field
- Proven success in HSE program implementation, maintenance, and supporting the growth of leading indicators and reduction of lagging indicators.
- Ability to manage HSE initiatives beyond regulatory and standard compliance through awareness campaigns, engagement activities, leading indicator programs, and leadership engagement activities.
- Experience with ISO 45001, 14001, and OSHA VPP.
- Experience in Tableau, Microsoft Power BI, or other business intelligence reporting software.
- Familiarity with ergonomics and machining safety (mills, lathes, grinding, cutting tools, etc.).
- Willingness and desire to continue professional development within HSE.

- Ability to balance short and long term priorities in a dynamic manufacturing environment.
- Sharp evidence and risk-based decision making skills with the resolution to make decisions and changes that positively influence safety culture.
- Adept in interpreting regulatory and HSE performance standards.
- Capability to manage and lead projects and coordinate with a multidisciplinary functional support team.
- Trend and data analysis with ability to develop reports, manage data quality, develop dashboards and KPI performance reporting using company programs and platforms (Excel, Power BI, Tableau).
- Creation of engaging and interactive HSE campaigns and initiatives that go beyond standards conformance and regulatory compliance.

Pay range for this opportunity is $79, 687 - $95,000.  This position is eligible for bonus participation.

Minimum pay rates offered will comply with county/city minimums, if higher than range listed.  Pay rates are based on a number of factors, including but not limited to local labor market costs, years of relevant experience, education, professional certifications, foreign language fluency, etc.
