Distributed Systems Engineer, Energy

Tesla's Energy Core Services (ECS) team builds and operates the backend applications and services powering the complete Energy customer experience globally. Our mission is to support all functionalities of the entire Energy customer journey—from ordering and design through installation, ownership, and ongoing service.
We serve millions of customers across Residential Energy (Powerwall, Solar Roof, Solar Panels, Tesla Electric, Home Charging), Commercial Energy (Megapack, Powerpack, utility-scale solar), and Charging (Supercharger network, Destination Charging, Semi Charging). We process billions in transactions annually while maintaining 99.99% uptime for mission-critical energy systems.
Our applications manage site and equipment lifecycles across millions of energy assets, orchestrate complex order-to-install workflows spanning months, automate energy system design using AI and satellite imagery, execute long-running business process workflows, and calculate real-time pricing with tax compliance—all powered by 100+ microservices built on event-driven architecture.
We're seeking distributed systems engineers to architect, build, and operate scalable applications and services supporting Tesla's mission to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy.

- Design and implement scalable distributed systems and APIs supporting the complete Energy customer journey (ordering, design, purchasing, installation, ownership) across Residential Energy (Powerwall, Solar), Commercial Energy (Megapack), and Charging products serving millions of customers globally with 99.99% uptime
- Architect event-driven microservices using Kafka/RabbitMQ with focus on fault tolerance, exactly-once delivery, distributed tracing, CDC pipelines, multi-region routing, and schema evolution across 100+ microservices
- Own database architecture and optimization across MySQL, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB managing complex schemas with millions of records, ensuring sub-100ms query latency, multi-region replication, and data sovereignty compliance
- Build production-grade infrastructure for 5+ million customers and 50,000+ installations annually—implementing circuit breakers, multi-layered retry logic, graceful degradation, idempotent APIs, and resilience patterns for high-value transactions with tight SLAs
- Develop AI-powered automation using LLMs and agentic AI to streamline customer workflows, including satellite imagery integration for site assessment, automated design-to-quote pipelines, intelligent BOM optimization, and zero-touch contract generation
- Architect workflow orchestration systems for long-running distributed processes spanning weeks to months using Temporal or Camunda, BPMN process engines, compensation logic, human-in-the-loop workflows, event correlation, and two-phase operations
- Design complex business logic engines including multi-dimensional pricing with real-time tax calculations and compliance audit trails, multi-phase delivery orchestration with material allocation, and contract lifecycle management for 20-30 year service obligations
- Integrate with third-party systems (solar manufacturers, utility providers, field operations, manufacturing) using industry-standard APIs, pull-based patterns, capability-based authentication, and rate-limited API gateways while ensuring data consistency
- Own CI/CD pipelines, monitoring dashboards, alerting, and on-call rotation using Prometheus, Grafana, distributed tracing, and logging—including feature-flagged deployments, correlation-based tracing, and zero-downtime migrations
- Lead technical initiatives from inception to production, define architectural patterns, drive API standards and large-scale migrations, mentor engineers on distributed systems best practices, and partner with product, design, field operations, finance, and manufacturing teams

- Strong proficiency in C# (.NET Core/8.0) or Golang for backend services, plus Python for automation, tooling, and AI workflows, with familiarity in 2+ additional languages demonstrating a polyglot mindset
- Deep distributed systems fundamentals including event-driven architectures, eventual consistency, fault tolerance, idempotency, distributed transactions, CAP theorem trade-offs, and compensation logic
- Production experience with Kafka (CDC pipelines, schema registry, multi-region clusters) or RabbitMQ, including partitioning strategies, delivery guarantees, consumer group management, and backpressure handling
- MySQL/PostgreSQL schema design for complex hierarchies, query optimization with indexing, multi-region replication with data sovereignty, plus MongoDB/NoSQL data modeling for high-throughput workloads
- RESTful API design, gRPC, service mesh patterns, API versioning, backward compatibility, and API gateway patterns with authentication, authorization, and rate limiting
- Hands-on workflow orchestration experience with BPMN/DMN using Temporal, Camunda, Airflow, or Cadence for long-running processes, stateful polling, event correlation, and compensation patterns
- Deep Kubernetes knowledge including Docker containerization, orchestration, infrastructure-as-code, and deployment strategies (blue-green, canary, feature flags) with zero-downtime migrations
- CI/CD pipeline development and operational ownership including monitoring, alerting, on-call responsibilities, Prometheus/Grafana, distributed tracing (Jaeger/OpenTelemetry), logging, SLIs/SLOs, and incident response
- Experience building AI agents or integrating intelligent systems using OpenAI, HuggingFace, or LangChain, plus daily use of AI-assisted development tools and emerging AI automation technologies
- Redis or other caching technologies for performance optimization and session management

Expected Compensation $168,000 - $396,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits
Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.
