The Senior Accountant performs advanced accounting and financial reporting functions, supports the integrity of the general ledger, and helps ensure timely and accurate month-end and year-end close activities. The position analyzes financial information, prepares and reviews reconciliations and reports, strengthens internal controls, supports compliance requirements, and serves as a technical resource to Finance staff and operational leaders.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

- Coordinate and perform key components of the monthly and annual close processes, including preparation and posting of recurring, adjusting, allocation, and reclassification journal entries.

- Analyze general ledger activity and investigate unusual, incomplete, or inaccurate transactions; prepare timely corrections with clear supporting documentation.

- Prepare and review reconciliations for bank, cash, payroll, fixed asset, accounts payable, accrued liability, prepaid expense, intercompany, and other balance sheet accounts.

- Maintain the fixed asset and depreciation records, including additions, disposals, transfers, useful-life reviews, and reconciliation to the general ledger.

- Support accounting for grants, contracts, programs, and restricted funding, including documentation of allowable costs, revenue recognition, allocations, and reporting requirements.

- Maintain payroll tax reporting files and reconcile payroll-related accounts and entries in coordination with Human Resources and payroll service providers.

- Research and resolve misapplied Accounts Payable, Payroll, cash receipt, and general ledger transactions; recommend process improvements to reduce recurring errors.

- In coordination with the CFO, prepare assigned schedules, reconciliations, confirmations, and supporting documentation for the annual independent audit and other financial reviews.

- Assist with annual budget development, forecasting, cash-flow analysis, and financial data requests from leadership, funders, and oversight entities.

- Prepare, file, and maintain required financial reports, including the Annual Unclaimed Property Report and other assigned filings.

- Serve as backup for bi-weekly payroll process.

- Develop and maintain accounting procedures, desk guides, schedules, and supporting records in accordance with internal policies and record-retention requirements.

- Monitor adherence to internal controls and segregation-of-duties practices; identify control gaps and recommend practical corrective actions.

- Serve as a technical accounting resource, provide guidance to accounting staff, review selected work products, and assist with cross-training and workflow coverage.

- Maintain confidentiality of financial, employee, client, vendor, and organizational information.

- Provide backup check-signing support when authorized and perform other duties assigned by the Chief Financial Officer.

Qualifications

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position does not have direct supervisory responsibility. The Senior Accountant may provide technical guidance, review work, coordinate assignments, and support training of Finance staff as delegated by the Chief Financial Officer.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.

- Five or more years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including general ledger, reconciliations, month-end close, and financial reporting.

- Experience in nonprofit, grant-funded, healthcare, behavioral health, child welfare, or other multi-program service environments is preferred.

- CPA, CMA, or progress toward a relevant professional certification is preferred.
