SUMMARY: The Dental Director is responsible for providing dental services as well as supervising all other dental staff. The Dental Director is also responsible for representing the health center in the community, developing dental health education programs, and management and administration of dental services at the health center.
PRIMARY DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: (other duties may be assigned)
- Develop cooperative and collaborative ventures with other dental health providers, such as volunteer clinics and clinical education for assisting and hygiene students
- Resolve conflicts between patients and staff
- Provide administrative and management direction for dental services
- Provide dental services to individual patients of all age groups
- Properly document diagnoses and treatment of dental patient visits
- Forward encounter forms to the Health Center’s billing department for timely processing
- Participate in the development of, and adherence to, the dental health care plan, clinical protocols, quality assessment and quality improvement procedures and other procedures of practice
- Adhere to the provision of the personnel policies of the Health Center
- Assess, diagnose, plan treatment and implement individual dental care plans
- Refer to other health care providers when necessary, including specialist for care and/or evaluation of conditions judged to require this additional expertise
- Maximize reimbursement opportunities from third-party payers, including commercial insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and procedures as well as applicable law. Supervisory responsibilities include:
- Dental staff including but not limited to Dentist, Dental Hygienist, Dental Assistants, Administrative Assistant
- Students during their rotation through the dental clinic
- Dental services provided by NHCHC’ dental staff at all locations in addition to the main dental clinic
- Supervision of community dental health education programs
ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following:
- Provide monthly progress reports to the CEO in a timely manner
- Monitor and implement contracts for dental services with other community entities
- Complete regularly scheduled personnel evaluation of all dental staff
- Hold department meetings with copies of the minutes delivered to the Administrative Assistant for filing within 5 days of meeting
- Participate in Senior Management as well as regular Staff and monthly Board meetings
- At the request of the CEO, assist in the preparation of grant proposals
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge skills, and/or ability required:
- Maintain membership in the dental society or association
- Maintain the appropriate licenses to practice dentistry in the State of North Carolina
- Maintain the appropriate Controlled Substance Registration Certification from the Drug Enforcement Administration
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE :
- Graduate of an accredited school of dentistry
- Minimum of two years of practice as a general dentist.
- Participate annually in continuing professional dental education.
LANGUAGE SKILLS : The Dental Director must have the ability to speak English fluently. The ability to speak other languages is a plus.
ESSENTIAL TECHNICAL/MOTOR SKILLS : The Dental Director must understand medical terminology and possess accurate keyboarding skills. The incumbent must have the ability to use standard office equipment: including computers, photocopiers, and facsimile machines. He/She possesses the ability to learn, understand, and use Internet insurance eligibility systems.
INTERPERSONAL SKILLS : The Dental Director possesses excellent telephone etiquette, interpersonal and customer service skills. Teamwork and communication skills are essential. The incumbent must treat all patients, co-workers, and managers with courtesy and respect.
MENTAL ABILITIES : The Dental Director possesses cognitive reasoning skills and the ability to think clearly in high-pressure situations. The incumbent has the ability to prioritize and withstand pressure of continual work with variable requirements. He/She has the ability to concentrate and maintain accuracy despite frequent interruptions. The Dental Director possesses critical thinking, organizational, problem solving and reasoning skills/capabilities. The incumbent must be able to identify a problem, identify possible solutions, make a decision on one of the possible solutions, implement the decision, and evaluate the results.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, REGISTRATIONS : Maintain the appropriate licenses to practice dentistry in the State of North Carolina; maintain the appropriate Controlled Substance Registration Certification from the Drug Enforcement Administration; maintain membership in the dental society or association.

The employee will be working inside a multi-cultural medical/dental clinic, which delivers comprehensive health care services, including HIV/AIDS treatment to the disadvantaged poor and underserved. The building is heated in winter and air conditioned in the summer. An employee may experience noise levels of moderate to loud: children crying and screaming, loud talking patients, patients speaking multiple languages at the same time, loud speaker and/or paging systems. An employee may be subject to exposure to copier toner, correction fluid, bright fluorescent lighting, and continuous personal computer exposure.
